really filmed in NYC?

Surely it would have been impossible to film this movie in a bustling metropolis such as New York City. Thousands of passerbys would have seen the muppeteers controlling the actions of the muppets - completely destroying the myth that is/was "the Muppets". Where was this movie actually filmed?

reply

It was actually filmed in New York City. On the dvd there is an interview with Jim Henson about the movie and he talks about filming in New York City. It's really quite interesting how they did it all.

i can imagine they would have blocked off the streets and used extras.... like most films do

The Muppets were marionettes when they rode bicycles.

I don't think Jim Henson would have been concerned with people seeing the Muppets being performed. Jim Henson didn't keep many secrets about his works, and there have been many behind-the-scenes specials and books abotu Jim Henson's works.

Much of The Muppets Take Manhattan Movie was filmed in Long Island City, in the borough of Queens, New York, which is right across The East River via The Queensborough Bridge, near The Upper East Side of Manhattan.

I wonder how they did Miss Piggy rollerskating? I keep hearing talk that it was a real person in a wig--maybe he/she had a Miss Piggy mask on? I would love to see the Jim Henson interview on when they made the movie--also I wish I could see behind the scenes of The Muppet Movie. All I know is in the first scene, Jim Henson spent a day or two in a 57 gallon steel drum submerged under the water while he performed Kermit in the swamp, and Fozzie driving was actually done by having the driver in the trunk with a closed circuit TV. How they put the accelerator and brakes in there (and how a grown adult fit) I will never know.

Look on the filming locations and you'll see where they filmed it. I think the outdoors stuff was in Manhattan, like when Dr. Teeth is calling for Kermit on the lion, which is also seen in Ghostbusters.
