so in the movie are the Macross's arms formed by ARMD's and in the show formed by the promethius and daetilus?

In the original TV series,2 ARMD class space carriers were supposed to rendevouz with the SDF-1 Macross after it folded with South Ataria Island,though a Zentradi patrol destroys both spacecraft and their escorts before such a task could be accomplished.(Episode 3)

However,out of nessecity both the CVS-101 "Prometheus and SLV-111"Daedalus" which were dragged along with the island in the fold are utilized in the TV series as the fortress's "arms."( Episode 4,5,and 6)

Whereas in the movie,it seems that both ARMDs were attached.

Looks better with the ARMDs.

You have an interesting aesthetic opinion. However to many Macross fan, the ARMDs were butt ugly.

Prometheus and Daedalus makes for more interesting arms.

Also, without Daedalus, Macross would not have executed the famous Daedalus manuevre. the same move could not have been executed in Macross 7 and Frontier as well. So.... there you go.

Though in the film, the "Promethus" never left Earth. Hikaru and Misa find it before they enter the protoculture city.

The movie is listed as a "docudrama"; a movie within the movie, made during the Macross 7 era.

The TV series is the correct continuity, and designs.
