Why was she called Pagan?

Was this character's name short for something or was it just one of those weird boarding school nicknames?

She was given the nickname as a child because she would be naughty and act like a pagan. I can't remember if her nanny gave her the name or if it was one of her mother's "friends"; it's been a long time since I read the book.

Her name was actually Jennifer, but she was christened by her nanny because of her laziness and mischievousness as a child (ex. Pick that up you little pagan).

Ok...I watched the whole miniseries this week (just snagged a copy of I&II) off Ebay) and in the series Pagan is Jenny, her friends called her pagan because they said she was "pagan." I guess she was very uncontemporary for her day given her sharp wit and untraditional beliefs.
