Johnny's defeat

Say what you like about Johnny but he was pretty decent when Daniel beat him at the tournament. Can't say he was a sore loser. He walked over to the announcer with the trophy , took it off him with the words "let me" (or something similar) and presented Daniel with it himself, looking very emotional, and said "You're alright LaRusso". It sort of redeemed him, in my eyes anyway. Love that scene.

Like Miyagi said "no bad student, only bad teacher"

Peace.

How? Remember now, "no such thing as bad student only bad teacher, teacher say, student do."

reply

What was unrealistic? I don't understand. You mean him telling his students to cheat?
I don't think so.
I think it's super important for him to win. No matter what it takes. So he was one of the villains.
What was unrealistic was Johnny suddenly becoming good at the end.
Johnny is the main villain. Kreese is a secondary villain.

There is almost always an honor culture in a tuff boy's life. Working with young kids, I've seen situations like that many times, and I think it was one of the most realistic moments in movies. It wasn't about turning good, it was about following that same honor code which he had been following all along: "When the other guy has earned your respect, you need to demonstrate it. Until he does, treat him like a dog."

There usually isn't an honor code in the life of sleazy adults like the coach. So yeah I can see the coach going the way he did. It wasn't unrealistic, just something what we aren't used to.

I normally would not agree with this. But I have to, from personal experience. I had a bully in grade school. And him and his group of friends would bully me, even at dances. But one day in grade 6, leaving school, they came up to me, and I lost it on the main bully, and fought him and got him to the ground and pummeled him. After that he did not bother me. Weeks later, we were in a group together, and he talked about something unrelated to the project, and to the other kids said, he and I were both similar in strength. He never bothered me again, and we were on good terms from then on out. It's an animal kingdom. It sounds cheesy, but if you can show you are not weak, you will gain respect.

ps. Last I heard he was in a gang and is a drug dealer and was a body builder, I would not try to mess with him now.

reply

Creepy. My friend's main bully (who ended up respecting him in a similar fashion) is now dead. Someone tried to mug him and apparently he resisted. I have no sympathy for him, not even right after the shocking news. He robbed people himself and would pressure others to rob for him. He was a criminal since age 14.

reply

Lol well someone needs to watch the film again, Kreese is the main villain buddy, just because Johnny had more screen time and he fights the big tourney doesn't make him more of a villain than Kreese, Kreese was the teacher.

reply

Are you serious?
Okay, the villain in a film or book or any story, is the

reply

Oops sorry I hit the submit button too soon and cant delete it.
The villain of a story is the one that's against the protagonist. In this case it's Daniel.
So if you were to ask the character Daniel Laruso who he views as HIS villain who do you think he would say?
The teacher at the karate school? The guy he met once briefly?
No way. He would say it's Johnny!
Johnny used to be Ali's boyfriend and he's angry that now she's with Daniel.
Johnny humiliated Daniel in front of Ali and all his new friends in the beach.
Johnny ran Daniel off the road nearly killing him and wrecking his bike
Johnny beat up Daniel super badly and may have nearly killed him if Miyagi hadn't stepped in. Hell even Johnnys friends were telling him to stop hurting Daniel "Johnny leave him alone man he's had enough!"

I can't believe that you could believe anyone other than Johnny is the villain if the film.
Now Karate Kid part 3? Kreese is definitely the villain in that.

reply

I get what you are saying, but no, Kreese is the main villain. Johnny is Daniels nemesis. The man pulling the strings (apparently) and making Johnny the way he is, is Kreese. Hence 'no mercy', 'out of commission' and 'sweep the leg'.

If those pen pushers up at city hall don't like it,well, they swivel on this middle digit!

reply

One of my fav scenes too. I think it goes to show how much he respected him after he won him.

reply

Mike Barns sure did not do anything to show such good sportsmanship in KK3. I think it would have been cool if Johnny had been in a sequel but as a good guy and a friend of Daniel and Mayagi.

If he had managed to win (if the Crane Kick had failed) I think he STILL would have congratulated Daniel. Daniel no longer had to worry about the bullying once he faced Johnny because he still would have won 2nd place and bullying only works if you are WAY tougher than your opponent. If you are only a little bit tougher the bullying does not really work. Facing Johnny if the fight had happened early in the tournament would not have saved him from the bullying necessarily but he had to beat several people some of them being other kobra kais to get to the final match so just getting there would have ended the bullying problem.

In fact even if his leg could not be fixed he would have been awarded 2nd place. I almost think Mayagi made a major error in judgement allowing Daniel to finish the match because being already broken there is a danger that his leg could suffer permanent damage.

reply

Well just to be clear here, his leg was not broken. It was a muscular injury which Miyagi relieved ( a bit unrealistically) by performing a form of acupressure.
Miyagi said Daniel had already achieved all that was necessary, but as Daniel pointed out if he lost in this way then the bullies still won. This is why Miyagi helps him take place in the final. Not necessarily to win but to face his nemesis Johnny Mano a Mano.

reply

Unrealistic?!
All injuries can be healed by rubbing your hands together really fast and then grabbing and twisting the hurt limb.
Everyone knows that
;)

reply

Johnny clearly wasn't thinking straight after Daniel illegally punched him in the back of the head in round two.

The Crane Kick was also an illegal move as it was a direct strike to the head. It is a tragedy that the once prestigious All Valley Karate Tournament was won by someone blatantly cheating and who technically wasn't eligible.

Illegally? Really? Guess they must have changed the rules.

You mean like the kick Johnny delivered right to Daniels head that the referee scores? Why is one kick legal and the other not? Oh that's right, because you say so.
t is a tragedy that the once prestigious All Valley Karate Tournament was won by someone blatantly cheating and who technically wasn't eligible.

No, the tragedy here is any uninformed person can come on here and make things up and the rest of the chimps in the gang believe it.

reply

I would think that Johnny gained a lot of respect for Daniel as I would because he turned it all around from a kid who is bullied to actually winning the event. Johnny may not have ended up Daniel friend as like Ali not on his wave length. But he will have respect for him now

reply

Can't say I've said otherwise in this thread.

reply

He looked like Mark Hamill with that hairstyle.

reply

Yes! Thought the same.

reply

His teacher poisoned his mind.

reply

I agree 100% Very underrated scene.

"You're all right, LaRusso! Good match!"

Would've been cool to see Johnny team up with Daniel against Barnes in part III, but then I think it would've been way too similar to Rocky and Apollo being friends in Rocky III.

*shrug*

"I learned that in prison, you like? You white trash piece-a shìt."

reply

True that.

reply

Yes, it's the typical trope of guys becoming friends after they fight. It's not realistic, but it fits the movie nicely, kind of redeeming Johnny's character a little bit.

reply

I had a fight once with a guy in school and we ended up best friends afterwards. Still see each other to this day.

reply

Nah it is not. My best friend hit me in the face (pretty badly) during elementary school (second grade) then, after school, the teacher brought my mom over to "confront him" (pretty irresponsible of her I must say) and my mom was just sympathetic to the little guy and told him we both had a lot in common, similar upbringing, etc. He might have told his mom all about it because a few years later he invited me over to his home and we ended up being best friends.

He still has anger issues, but I love him to death, he's like a brother to me.

reply

I didn’t find it realistic either, especially so quickly after the fight.

reply

Johnny was just giving Danny respect for the fight, gee.

reply

Exactly

reply

Maybe if we saw some sign of decency and honor earlier.

reply

It was the '80s. Movies didn't have to make sense. Characters did whatever they needed to do in a given scene, even if it completely contradicted what they'd do next.

reply

this is reason why i never like this overrate film.

same thing happen when they break his knee: "im sorry daniel!!! wah, wah, wah!! im sorry man!!!". what? why do such thing if that is how you feel?

whole film these psycho torture and torment this boy. they do horrendous thing. they even attempt to murder him when dressed as skeleton.

for whole movie, terrorize. total terrorism of this wuss. then at end bad guy like "yeah here you go daniel you earned it man yeahhh!!!"

no. this is inconsist. it does not fit tone. you either have sadist who get comeuppince, or you dont show them be so sadist. you cannot have this evil and then pretend all they did was play around with daniel and be happy for hims. they brutal and try to kill him.

end of film should have kreese taken to prisons and gang of boys all put juvenile prison with transfer to adult prison once they all 18. that is ending with great message! violence will not be tolerate.

reply

Huh? Did u even watch the movie? Everything in it is clear u know not hard to figure out. The Cobras were bullies not trying to kill Danny or anything like that. The sensei wanted them to eliminate Danny from the tournament & this shows with the extreme stuff with Johnny & Bobby all by their teachers orders. I mean gee not hard to figure out 🙄

reply

"Huh? Did u even watch the movie?"

in scene when they in fancy dress and they beat daniel san. that look to me like attempt murder. even one of them say "he had had enough" but he get shout down and they keep going. that is not beatdown. if you keep beating defenceless wuss with 5 pussys on one then it is attempt murder!! they put him in coma at least if miyaggi does not show.

reply

Umm...Johnny lost his cool after Danny poured water on him. He wanted Danny to pay with a beating he'll never forget. It still goes back to the sensei u know. That no mercy crap & teaching people a lesson & stuff. Things got out of hand in that moment is all. I dealt with some bullying when growing up & things got out of a hand a few times when I tried to fight back like when the bully tripped me hard & I hit my head on the step. Teenagers dont think things through in the moment u know. They do stuff out of emotion.

reply

there is difference between bully and behavior of johnny and gang.

like in part 3 when they dangle daniel off cliff edge.

this behavior is psycho rage. abuse, violence, vicuous & grevious body harm, attempt murder. it go beyond bully. far beyond.

if myagi no show up in part 1 then daniel in coma. 5 people beating defenceless man.

karate kid get tone all wrong. daniel should not beat these guy in tournment. he should shoot them in self defence! and kreese and gang should go to prison.

reply

Ok um...you're on a different wave length now.

reply

with due respects, biggs, i dont think so! we all view film our own way!

i always find karate kid film disturb in the way daniel treated. i feel this way seeing it as kid, and my opinion not change. he is not bullyed, he brutalized! he driven off cliff on bike. he almost beat to death in gay shower costume (imagine dying dress this way). this film is dark. it is harrowings!

i think fitting end to film of this tone is not tournament, but Danial arming himself with automatic weapon, and blowing away cobra ki gang when they try and kill or handicap him again like they do several time in this movie.

cobra ki are vicious and bloodthirsty animal. i dont want crane fag kick. i want coup de grâce delivered to johnny and kreese!
