This movie was a bore; except for one scene

OK, I saw this movie over 20 years ago when I was about 18. My brother rented it and we had nothing else and no TV signal so we were stuck with it. For my age and time it was a bore fest; I didn't understand it, it was slow moving, almost completely forgettable.

And yet it had this one scene that was totally out of control. The twerp dude, (Time Roth) goes to an outdoor café to get some beers. On the way in some Euro trash guys are making fun of him because he's looking like a typical UK hooligan. He's nice enough, greets them and while he's ordering his beers he pulls out an ice pick, a bike chain and some throw stars! And in the space of about five seconds he takes out all the Euro trash dudes, collapses roof structure on them, and manages to hold on to the beers...

At least that's how my 20+ year old memory of it goes. I'd like to see that scene again.

Well, I finally bought a DVDd of this film, I saw it about 20 years ago too.

And I disagree. To me, it is still Frears's best, to date.

Innovative script, with most of the clichés being turned upside down. Characters act in an unexpected way. And there is great acting by the two main stars, and, of course, by Tim Roth, one of my favourite actors of all time.

gottfrid, maybe my more mature perspective will appreciate it now! Please let me know if my memory of that scene was correct?

reply

Hy, Im not gottfrid (obviously). I saw this movie yesterday (for the first time) your memory was correct...only one thing; ''Euro trash guys''(they look normal to me-but than again-I'm from continental Europe) were speaking Spanish, so I'm not sure are they really making fun of him or Roth's character(who also does not speak Spanish) is just crazy, he is a wannabe hitman after all.

I saw it last night and they are definitely making fun of him IMO. They are looking at him behind his back and laughing. One of them even gestures toward Tim Roth and then touches his own hair which makes the others laugh - clearly they think Tim's hair is funny. They should have known better than to mock a teenage hoodlum Brit - especially if he's Tim Roth! I've been a huge fan of his for years and it was intriguing to compare him in The Hit to his role in The Incredible Hulk which I saw at the weekend. It's almost like the Myron character, 25 years later after special armed forces killer training, more intense, and with much better hair. He's one of those men who just keeps getting sexier with age.

Didnt see the new hulk, but if Tim is on it, Im gonna like it.

They were making fun of him, of course. I dont speak spanish, but by the gestures and faces they are making we can clearly see they think Tim Roth's character is a funny guy. Too bad for them...

reply

They make fun of how he walks, his clothes and his hair.

I think they were supposed to be Basque, not "euro-trash." There was some graffiti on the wall that said "ETA" which is the abbreviation for the Basque Nationalists, a semi-terrorist/militant/independence movement in Spain near the French border. They have their own language and culture and don't always look kindly on outsiders, even other Spanish folks.

Man, who the hell cares? Clearly you know what he/she is talking about or else you wouldn't be so indignant. Your comment comes across like the Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons.
