Raymond Burr.

I don't know if this is an often asked question or not so if it is I'm sorry but does anybody know why Raymond Burr decided to come back as Steve Martin in this film? Did he like the character/Godzilla franchize and just wanted to come back or did he need the work and money? Thats one question I've never been able to find out and I've always been a little curious about that.

I don't suppose you have like a link to a website that posted an interview with him in which he said this? I would like to read one if there's one out there. From what I heard of him in biographies and such, they hardly ever metion his fondess for Godzilla and state that he was a really private kind of guy so I think it would be interesting to read an interview in which he admits to wanting to come back to this franchise.

I read somewhere (I think in Japanese Horror and Fantasy films by Stuart Galbreth) that Burr was very proud to be a part of the series and in fact wrote the eulogy his character recites as Godzilla falls in the volcano.

I like Raymond Burr in anything he is in. He has a great presence. This is actually why I am watching this movie now, cause I found out he is in it.

Apparently Raymond would only do this is New World took it seriously for anti-nuclear stuff. I read they planned to redub it to make a comedy.

perhaps Raymond was against nuclear weapons, and Godzilla films were an interesting way of spreading the message?

Yes, it souds to me that for all the fans complaingin about the butcher-job done for the US version, we have Raymond Burr to thank for it not being 10 times worse. All the American characters in the film seem like idiots (especially that young, skinny guy who think s he has to "explain" things to Mr. Martin), but Burr's character was very much in line with the overall intent of the Japanese film-makers.

Since the main character of the film was a journalist, it's a shame they didn't actually include Raymond Burr in the film when it was made in Japan, as he would have fit in the story. (If they had, they could have gotten him to dub his own voice-- heh.)
