Anchor Bay/STARZ does NOT have the rights, Warner Bros. does!

Hey guys,

Just to clarify something. Anchor Bay doesn't have the rights to this anymore, if they ever actually did. I know they claimed to, but wouldn't they have released it a long time ago if they seriously had?

Anyway, Warner brothers home video has this and they could release it if there's enough demand for it. Go to Turner Classic Movies via this link, http://www.tcm.com/top/notondvd/, and vote for it. It should be #111.

Monsters HD already proved that Warners has a remastered print available, so let's try and get this on DVD already.

i have the anchorbay vhs so they did own it because they bought virtually all of new world pictures library of films

I voted for it a long time ago. Does Warner Bros. release it, or is this a TCM Video only for sale online kind of DVD?

warner brothers does not own the right anchor bay still owns the rights. TCM shows this list to companies and thats it. this is what it says on the list

The list is used to encourage studios to release their most requested films not currently available in any format on DVD

so tcm is just using the list to get companies to release it

reply

If this is true, then why does the Monsters HD print have a Warner bros logo at the end of it? At some point the rights reverted from Anchor bay to another company, Largo, I believe, who was bought out by warner bros.

TCM is also owned by Warner brothers, and use that poll to decide what stuff in their library to release. I'm sure not all of it is solely warner archive titles, but a lot is.

the warner bros version is different than the anchor bay version the warner version has some scenes only found in the japanese version i heard

Well, since it might be likely Warner Bros. owns the Japanese version, wouldn't it make sense for them to release only the Japanese version?

Do they release 25 year old foreign monster movies with subtitles and/or english dubbing anymore?

Up to #100 right now.

Just voted!!! Today, it's up to 99.

Well, I do hope WB is willing to give up the rights and sell them back to Toho.

I want both the Japanese and American versions on DVD! Widescreen, of course. So I voted.

The reason the movie hasn't come out is because Toho and Anchor Bay are in disagreement about who owns the rights. No one's sure exactly what the dispute is, but my guess is that it has something to do with Toho having sold the film originally to New World.

We know that Anchor Bay owns the rights now to many old New World films, but my guess is that since Toho signed a contract with New World and NOT Anchor Bay, they're hesitant to allow them to re-release the movie. I know it sounds silly that Toho's in a big fuss over something so simple, but you have to remember that Japanese and American copyright laws are not exactly the same. The Japanese might be playing it the way they're used to in Japan.

Of course, that's all speculation, but it's the most reasonable one I think.

Now, why does the TV version end with the Warner Bros logo? Simple. Warner Bros has the TV rights. It's very common in the industry; you can regularly find movies on TV that end with, say, a CBS Television logo, but have been released on DVD by another company altogether. That's the case for G85.

I am losing hope.

Just voted. As of March 8, 2011, we are at number 85 with 1,270. That Ted Turner is a stickler so now is not the time to sit on your hands. If you read this post I am asking you to vote now.

Get a region free dvd player and pick up the R3 ROG dvd, boom problem solved. It would be nice to get one with better image quality though.

seeing as WB owns the rights to this AND are putting out the reboot next year... MAYBE, we will get a special release of this? Hmm, WB?

I found the Japanese version via Torrent several years back! Picture is about a 6.5/10 (as far as less then 1Gig non-HD video files go) and audtio full Japanese complete with Japanese subs for the non-Japanese speaking parts (like for the Russians and Americans).

Revisited this a few days ago with my son getting ready for the latest Big G flick May 16th. Can't wait!
