Godzilla 1985 influenced a LOT of popular sci-fi movies
I've always found it strange how many popular science-fiction/monster movies used themes or ideas that had previously been used in this film. Running list so far:
(1.) Jurassic Park (1990/1993) - The novel and movie popularized the idea that dinosaurs and birds were related. In this movie, the (then) theory that dinosaurs and birds are genetically related is the basis for luring Godzilla into the volcano.
(2.) The Abyss (1989) - The aliens in the movie inadvertently trigger Cold War tensions between the U.S. and USSR when one of their ships collides with a nuclear submarine. In this movie, Godzilla also nearly starts WWIII after he sinks a nuclear submarine. Also, in both films, the creatures' emergence from underwater is meant to serve as a lesson for mankind about the dangers of nuclear war.
(3.) Cloverfield (2008) - The Cloverfield monster's body is covered in gigantic parasites which attack and kill humans. In this movie, Godzilla is also covered in gigantic, mutated sea lice which kill off the crew of a fishing boat.
