The Ending?

Does anyone think the ending was sad? just seeing Godzilla desperate to get out of the volcano, only to fall in and hearing him squealing in slow-motion, with that music in the background. As a kid, I thought this was the final Godzilla movie (and since also it was release the same year I was born in the US) until Biollante. I remember crying, anyone else agree?

reply

Yeah, that ending used to do that to me too. It could have made Godzilla the Old Yeller for the eighties (until you find out he's not dead yet.) Godzilla Vs. Destroyah is almost as sad.

reply

That ending was heartbreaking! I cried my eyes out!

reply

I do find it sad. The soundtrack really gets ya doesn't it? Destroyah for me was even worse. I literally get choked up everytime I watch it! Again, the soundtrack...whewww...gives me chills thinking about it.

I'm the dude...so that's what you call me, you know?

reply

Yeah that made me cry when I was little too. I LOVE this movie!! Godzilla 1985 and Godzilla VS. Biollante are in my opionion the two best!!

reply

I'm 24 now and it has been awhile since I saw this movie so I figured I'd pop it in and check it out. I found myself tearing up a bit during the ending. Poor fella. He's just misunderstood that's all. My tape is getting really bad. I hope they release both versions on DVD at some point cause I really like that movie.

reply

I haven't watched this in a few years, trying to save my vhs's life, but everytime I've watched it I have cried. :(

Yes, the ending bothered for a while after I watched it for the first time. I remember I kept asking, "What happened to Godzilla?"

reply

I didn't cried but, yeah, the ending was pretty sad...

reply

Son of Godzilla was sad. I hate Spiders!

reply

I thought the ending was sad too. But it always confused me why that sorrowful music would play and why everyone looks like they're about to cry. It almost looks like they're regretting killing Godzilla.

Yea the ending is sad. I first saw this when I was six and remember thinking it was over, but then I saw Biollante and everything was ok. But still, what ever Godzilla is or does, we must remember that he is our fault and he should be dealt with with sympathy.

true, but without there being a\n uncut version on DVD yet, not a lot of U.S. viewers sadly know that.

omg i balled my eyes out when i seen that part just the whole falling in the volcano n the music they play is a heart killer i was like 13 and i was so bortherd by it cuz i loved godzilla so much

reply

Very sad. One of the saddest movie endings I could think of. Even though Godzilla destroyed a lot of Japan and killed people, it seems he wasn't really evil but just a wandering giant animal. And when he fell into that volcano squealing with that music, I was nearly in tears.

reply

HOLY CRAP! I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE! AWSOME! I FEEL LIKE WATCHING RIGHT NOW!
I downloaded it! It's the Jap version with subs! It looks like a DVD rip to me. It's even widescreen! Awsome stuff!

reply

I was 11 years old when I saw this in the theatre and I was very sad. I used to bring the vhs over to my cousins house when I watched him and his younger brother and the young one would cry his eyes out. Always a painful ending!

reply

Just hearing that ending THEME from this movie makes me tear up, even with knowing that he'd be back for a few movies before Godzilla vs. Destroyah and then the revamped Godzilla a few years later. It's especially heart-wrenching when you hear that high shriek as it falls into the volcano, Goddayum...

reply

I would never watch the end. I'd get till he let that last roar and they pushed the button then I would turn it off, fast forward it, then watch the Transylvania 6-5000 trailer at the end. I hated that shriek. Sounded to feminine. However in the Japanese version that last high pitched squeal is gone, and it is even more sad.

reply

IMHO the one and only thing that is actually better about the American version is that awful shriek as Godzilla falls. Like others have said here it brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it.

agreed. The only scene that I felt the U.S. version improved was the ending and it was not Raymond Burr's somber, allegorical speech which was well-done. What really won me over was that high-pitched shriek that ends with a horrific echo as Godzilla descends into the volcano. And it was that shriek that really emphasized our thoughts of the horrible pain Godzilla must be suffering in the molten rock. Of course, since Biollante came out, part of that was ruined, but it's still one of the most emotional scenes in film history.

But other than that, the Japanese version is superior in every way.

reply

I cried too. I always choke up whenever I even hear the name of Godzilla vs. Destroyah though.

Yep, I remember the time I saw it. It was over a decade ago. I definitly cried.

reply

Yes this end was very moving and strong. But Godzilla came back as always to fight another day.

reply

Die die die! Now he has melted like the wicked witch of the west.

Uh baby U 4got to pull out. 9 months later, can U pull this ucking baby outta me, do that @ least!

You are not alone. I too, remember seeing this and seeing that scene and hearing Godzilla's final, agonizing scream, put me in a state of shock. After it was over and I was getting ready for bed (it had aired on channel 5 on a Friday night), I was near tears. My mom and dad asked me what was wrong. I responded, now breaking down in tears, "They killed Godzilla!". That same sound and image kept playing in my head, and it haunted me for months. I was afraid of watching King Kong Lives, because I thought it would end on a similar, sad note (then I watched it, thought it was bad, and cried for a whole different reason! J/K). But, when subsequent Godzilla movies stared coming out (Biolante, Destroyah, etc.) I realized Godzilla was back and us Godzilla fans can now rejoice!

I know, it is kind of strange, getting all teary eyed over a behemoth getting burned alive, but, at the same time, I should have known Godzilla would be back. No volcano, No other giant monster, or No American Remake from 1998 can stop Godzilla!

GO GO GODZILLA!

Totally agree. I especially got upset when they had it as if he is looking at the camera and as everyone else has said, that awful sad high pitched scream at the end...so sad.
