Is there a gap between age and music?

The movie/music are 80's, but because its supposed to demonstrate a repressed, behind-the-times, small rural town, the values (and some fashions) pre-date the 80's. (I was there then, both small rural town+urban settings).

after thinking about it I believe that you are right, it does seem kinda 50's ish the characters anyway,, I grew up in the 80's and the music is right for the time period.

The movie was made/set in the 1980s. Fashion trends take longer to make it to rural areas, so they were would still be some 1970s fashion. Many adults don't keep up with the latest fashion, so they might have more of a 1960s style about them.
