Music has not held up well

Watched it for the first time. Much of the music (with the exception of the lead song, Footloose) just hasn't held up well since 1984. Kevin Bacon and Lithgow do their best to make this a watchable film -- but just barely.

The story was also weird. Why would you ban dancing because some kids got into a car accident? How exactly would you enforce this ban?

Oh well. Kevin Bacon was gorgeous as a youngster. That is all.

"Why would you ban dancing because some kids got into a car accident?"

It was not that simple. Did you not pay attention to the movie? And anyway the movie is based on things that actually happened. So weird or not, this is stuff that has actually happened.

"It's Minnie Pearl's murder weapon."

Exactly, part of the blame should've been on the fact that the kids were drinking, HOWEVER, as Willard pointed out, more in the novelization than the actual movie, the good old boys weren't going to give up their beer and whiskey so instead they decided to ban music and dancing.

you'd have to understand rural America and the American Christian Taliban to get it

Who cares about stairs? The main thing is ice cream.

Whaaat? The music is... Alright, its dated. Does that make it any less enjoyable? Ehh not from this end. Lol

That may be because I am a child 'of' the eighties. Admittedly, only born in '88, but I still consider myself a child of the eighties thanks to my siblings and mother, via osmosis. I love the eighties! The music, the style, everything!!!

So, no. For me, the music is still enjoyable, albeit somewhat cheesy (all hail synthesizers!).

I was born in '85 and personally I love 80s movies and music (generally speaking). The music of this movie was in one word: GREAT, can't stop listening to it. The move was however, meh, lol!

I grew up in the inner city in the midwest and our town also banned school dances.

I think it's one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.

reply

The soundtrack is fantastic. I have some of the songs on my workout playlists. The music is dated/very 1980s, but they're still great songs.

You're kind of not right in the head.

You think the music should be current? Really, music from decades ago, should sound fresh. The sound track is full of dance hits from the 80s.

I think Lithgow is great.

And the film made AFI of a 100 greatest films, so folk love it.

As to the plot... It is based on a true story. http://www.okgazette.com/oklahoma/article-13279-‘footloose’-the-okg-true-hollywood-story.html

How could the enforce it. Well, the way all laws are enforced. When someone is caught, the law takes action.

I am sure they already had laws against driving and drinking. Out of fear and control, they passed a law in an effort to protect souls and bodies.

I don't find the music dated at all. I don't care when I hear the songs from the 'Footloose' soundtrack I love them. Unlike today, the music from the various artists grew on you over weeks and months. Now an artist say Beyoncé puts out a song with her husband Jay Z or justin Beiber and 20 mins later social media is telling you it's a megahit via download. Meanwhile you have no clue what song or cd it is-if that.

OP - Just a matter of opinion. What music do you like?

I guess every song made before 2012 sounds dated now.

Dancing In the Sheets - Fresh.

Never, The Girl Gets Around, Holding Out For a Hero, and Bang Your Head, and Hurts So Good - Rockin'.

Waiting For a Girl Like You, Almost Paradise, I'm Free, and Let's Hear It For the Boy - sentimental and touching.

Good stuff.
