What branch of Christianity are the characters?

Baptist. I grew up in a church in the 80's that was equally repressed. I have seen the effect of this kind of closed minded thinking in many small towns.

@chas437 it may have been filmed in Utah but that is the only connection. Mormons have dances for the youth every month.

It was a "Disciple of Christ" church from the opening scene. But the practice of the reverend was more fundamental Baptist than anything.

My guess would be Fundamentalist Baptist (or Southern Baptist). Dancing has always been frowned upon in Southern Baptist Churches.
