I had planned on buying this before, but after seeing it in the Wal-Mart bargain bin, I jumped on it and bought it. Excellent movie, although I was kind of expecting that, since both of my parents have always loved it. These are amazing performances (that sadly not many people remember today), and a great story. Not to mention I love Pat Metheny's score for this one!

Certainly deserving of a special edition. Most reviews I've read haven't come close to getting this film. Not to say it's flawless film-making. Its tone is all over the place. Rather than one director it looks like a few directors have worked on it. The whole film seems coloured by the Snowman. There is this drugged logic which leaks from the script. The music as well. Was Pat straight when he put this one together? There's supposed to be a difference between incidental music and the second track on an album. Still, great music. As distorted espionage stories go is Falcon and the Snowman the best?
Sure, some of it has aged. it would have to be either Falcon or The Edge of Darkness (classic mid 80s series from BBC).

I loved the way it showed the nuts and bolts of the spy trade. Alex - Daulton's contact - was an enjoyable character to watch. Daulton may call him 'a clerk,' but it's obvious he was trained to handle people like Daulton and he's good at it. Liked that scene where Alex and that other Soviet drag him away from the Embassy party he crashes, arguing as they haul him down the stairs. The Russian isn't translated, but it's obviously, "You're responsible for this scumbag!" "-I didn't tell him to come here!"

Would like to know if classified data vaults of the time were really as hilariously lax as it is depicted in the movie. Drinking on the job, blithely destroying communications as personal favors, code books left hither and yon. I hope they've tightened up their act?

Andrew Daulton Lee was released on parole in 1998. However, the Falcon himself is still in prison from what I read about him. After his escape, known as the 'Flight of the Falcon', more time was added onto his conviction. In an old transcript interview after his capture, they projected he would be released sometime when he reached 90 -- but I think someone mentioned his release in 2003. (Correct me if I'm wrong :))

I don't know why Penn wasn't nominated for best supporting actor for this film. Unlike any of his other roles, he really portrayed the drug-abusing, paranoid Daulten perfectly. Look at his work in Bad Boys or Colors for examples...he was nothing like this in Faclon and the Snowman.

I thought Sean was amazing as well.
It just shows he has SO much range and talent.
This guy is a legend.

It's nothing like his work in those movies because they're all completely different performances, which he pulls off extremely well, even if he could have probably pulled on the reigns a bit here. This is a testament to his abilities as an actor.

Thumbs up here, also. This film still holds up incredibly well after twenty years. It's still a riveting drama even if you know what's happening but is always worth watching, especially for the usual remarkable performance from Sean Penn, which should have earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
