Cold shouldered?

I wonder if this movie has been cold shouldered by the award jury's. It seems just a little strange to me that a movie of this quality and caliber hasn't even received a single nomination, also considering the strength of the performances of its actors, especially Sean Penn.

Could it be that its theme, which was not Reagan regime-friendly, hurt its chances of getting a major award? If so, it truly is a pity.

My theory on Feds is that they're like mushrooms: feed them *beep* keep them in the dark.

All the movie's strengths are its weaknesses as well. The screenplay is tight yet not thorough enough, the acting is memorable but also occasionally over the top (Penn) or stiff (Hutton), direction is very atmospheric and tense yet sometimes it loses its focus. It's a great movie with flaws that don't hurt it. Having said that, the idea that the Academy simply didn't like the film because of these flaws is not implausible to me.
