What was that hideous thing Hutton was driving?

I've seen mutant fetuses in jars that were more visually appealing than that car.

the ultimate classic car. A Volkswagon Thing.

It's a classic now, but was a joke when they came out in the 70's!!

reply

A joke perhaps, but I sure saw a lot of them in the 70s.

Lori Singer? Hideous indeed.

I agree....I cringed when I saw him driving it.
I was thinking to myself, "Is that an ACTUAL car?!!"

Selma and Patty Bouvier are driving the same car in "The Simpsons"

It's one of the original sports utility vehicles! The Type 181 Volkswagen (yes this IS the proper spelling... no "o" ever!) was called the "Thing."

It was a Mexican built machine, a similar design to the VW "jeep" the Germans drove in WWII. The 181 had a much larger engine (about 57hp) versus the 25 hp engine on the WWII KDF-wagen.

I really LIKED the car in the movie. It was customized with VW microbus taillights in the movie versus the original taillamps which were the same as found on the 1973-77 VW Bugs sold in the USA.

The Thing is a super-efficient car, great for desert driving (air cooled engine, no radiator). The current "new beetle" from VW is a true piece of garbage as it is water-cooled, has bad ergonomics and is front-wheel drive.

Viva los Type 181!

Ironic that the OP called the Thing a "thing". Some folks back in the early '70's had them painted in WWII German camo schemes, complete with Wehrmacht markings.

reply

Wow, thanks for the info on "The Thing"

They were (are) tough as nails, you still see well used Things all over Mexico

You will find one in most American beach communities, at least non-gold coast ones. I suppose emissions rules may have forced them out in some places. Like most old Bugs, they still sell for close to their original retail price and are much prized by their owners. Until they want something like heat, acceleration, or the ability to get repairs without waiting two months for parts or juryrigging something.

As a lifestyle indicator, VW Things are a BIG turn-on!
