do you think lynch was influenced by flash gordon (1980) when making this
at all?
shareWhatever the influence was, I don't think I could watch this again. I tried for almost 40 years to get through the whole thing. I finally did, and I realize I did not miss much. Would rather watch Flash.
Also, I thought I saw some similarity to the Never Ending Story
They were both Dino de Laurentiis productions from the early 80s, so that's probably how any similarities came in.
(OK, technically Gordon was filmed in 79)
I think Lynch didn't have control over most of the crew and even less over post-production, so a lot of the effects and final cut touches were more controlled by Dino De Laurentiis (and his daughter) than anyone else. De Laurentiis used a lot of the same effects, production, and costuming people from movie to movie (like Carlo Rambaldi, Emilio Ruiz, Carlo De Marchis, Kit West, Giannetto De Rossi, etc) so you'll see a similar approach to the effects scenes from film to film including this, KING KONG 1 & 2, WHITE BUFFALO, TAI PAN, CONAN 1 & 2, and FLASH GORDON.
I would wager that Lynch was not personally drawing much from other recent films of the day because he wasn't that big of a cinema-goer or a sci-fi geek. He is and was much more of a fan of classic and foreign films like the works of Ingmar Bergman, Tarkovsky etc. Probably his biggest influence for this film I'd wager would be something like SOLARIS.
