Why doesn't the sandworm attack Paul?

When Paul sets to domesticate the sandworm and puts the vibrator into the ground, the sandworm appears, but then it just kinda goes sideways uninterested, it doesn't attack Paul or even go towards the vibrator. Of course it's then easy for Paul to climb on it.

WHAT THE HELL???????? WHY DOESN'T IT ATTACK?????????

In the book, the purpose of the "thumper" is to detour the sandworm.
It is a great image, but the idea that something can move through solid sand like that is so absurd. Still to my teenage self when I read this book it was a wonderful fantasy world.
