Just read the book then watched this film.

This was pretty cheesy. It didn't really do the book justice.

How do you know the film was cheesy if you read the book rather than watched the film?

re-read OP "than watched the film"

Ah, I see. Everything is as clear as frosted glass now.

True. There is another Dune miniseries with William Hurt in it. I have it but have not finished it. Then there was a documentary about a guy who was going to make a very long movie about Dune, but it did not happen. Jodorowsky's Dune or something like that.

How can you make a movie about something that is so vivid in one's imagination and rich story? Pretty hard I'd say. I knew when I first went to see this movie when it came out it was not going to be acceptable, but some of the effects and sets were pretty cool.

The Starship Troopers movie was better because it made of itself its own thing. That thing fit in movie format and was fun to watch as well as thoughtful.

You're being very kind to this movie. It was awful, which puzzles me, because it's David Lynch. And the special effects were terrible, even for 1984! The worms?? PUH-lease!

And why was Baron Harkonen floating around in an anti gravity suit with the worst case of super acne and warts ever seen in a movie? I don't remember any of that shit in the book.

For me, this is a 'so bad it's good' movie. All the traditional Lynch features are in place, great cast, great source material - what's not to like? But then again I enjoy watching movies like 'Waterworld' or 'Space Hunter'. Jodorowsky's 'Dune' could have been even worse. And the book is so huge it really becomes a challenge to adapt it properly.

"thEn"

The book is too complex to transfer to the screen.
