Dune version

I remember watching Dune on tv several times over the years. It always ran for four hours. I watched Dune last week and it ran for only 2 hours 30 minutes. There were many scenes in this shortened version that were left out. One scene I remember is a Fremen challenging Paul to a duel. Paul kills the Fremen and the Fremen's body is reduced to water. The water is then given to Paul.

Is there a DVD of the Dune movie that was shown in the theaters back in 1984?

reply

Yes, it is on side two of a DVD I bought at a large retail chain in the Pacific Northwest in the late 2000s. Don't know if they still make it but I'm sure if your careful about which edition you purchase on Amazon you'll find it there. The four hour version really isn't that good on reviewing, the sound quality is awful and not the finished sound editing we got in the theatrical version. They used to run it on WGN and it does flesh out some of the details from the book to make the movie more understandable, but once you've read the book and know the plot, the unfinished quality of this longer edit makes it vastly inferior to the Theatrical version.

Thank you captkirk. I can buy a DVD with the extended version on one side and the theatrical version on the other side. Do you know if this theatrical version shows most of the scenes that are not shown on tv today?

What you're really looking for is the Dune Redux alternative edit by Spicediver.

It has no superior version, IMHO.
