What year is it on our calendar in this movie?
In the movie it's just said it's the year 10,191 but isn't that supposed to be on a different calendar? If so, then it's even further in the future because it wouldn't be the 10,191 of the Christian calendar.
It was 10,191 After Guild or AG.
There's been a lot of ranges given between Encyclopedia, Kid+Kev, etc (i.e. sources that most don't consider canon); but the events of Dune likely take place from 20 to 30 millennia from now.
There was an initial era of space exploration and expansion.
Then the era of Thinking Machines.
Then the Butlerian Jihad.
Then a few more decades/centuries perhaps before the founding of the Guild.
Kid+Kev tried to squash it all down into a tight timeline, but I thought Frank had implied longer in some of the Reverend Mother / other memory stuff.
There's no really definitive answer as the books I've read don't make any definite connection between the Imperial calendar and ours, but from various hints in the books I would say the events of Dune take place about 20,000 years in the future.
According to the timeline at the beginning of the non-canon Dune Encyclopedia the first atomics are used in 14255 BG [before Guild] during an intraprovincial war [1945 AD], which would place the events of the movie's start in 26,391AD.
