Could there have been a peace...
if Paul married princess Irulan? I read somewhere that this was brought up in the novels. Does is not also make sense that since the emperor & the duke were cousins to assure peace between their two families?

Peace, such as it may have been, was only temporary and enforced. The Fremen jihad went out to world after world, ensuring allegiance to the new Emperor. The Corrino also continued to plot against Paul, wanting the throne back for themselves.
