Are you also a fan of Lynch's Dune as well Jet? Seems like I can't check a site of a favourite SF movie and your name pops up,not that that is bad thing. ๎
Are you stalking me, Nex? ๎ฆ Yes, I'm a Dune fan. (film only) The first couple of times I saw it, I didn't think much of it. But, after seeing the "Smithee" version, it began to grow on me. I now own the special tin cased DVD with both versions. I tried watching SyFy's reboot but, since it was closer to the books, there were no Weirding Modules. I can't even imagine the story without them since I never read the book.
The louder UFO "debunkers" argue the more terrified they are it's all true.๎ฉ
Also have the Smithee version on dvd have the Lynch cut on VHS (which is slightly more disturbing with the imagery)but I also think the Smithee version is better since there is more exposition scenes where things are explained slightly better although I do like the "mystery" of he original. Yeah I tried to watch the SyFy version as well but although it did have quite an respectable supporting cast it somehow couldn't replace the original cast from my mind which seemed a lot closer to the spirit of the novels. And I thought the CGI was awful that kind of material needs some majestic live sets to give it more substance and gravitas, and though Herbert purist may loathe what Lynch did with the movie(how can one even show in one movie that has a source material that covers various books to draw from?)I think Lynch stayed in the spirit of the books and made quite a trippy and dazzling movie out of it,and from what I have heard Herbert himself was quite pleased with the movie when he saw it so who are we (and the critics)to judge when the author himself thinks it's good or at least captured the essence of his story?
I did not realize the weirding modules were only in the film when I first saw it, and I then read the novel and wondered where they were. I was somewhat disappointed, as I thought the sonic weapons were really cool.
Now that I have read the original novels more than once and gotten more into the Dune world, as it were, I see why the lack of sonic weapons is better. The Weirding Way is a tool of the Bene Gesserit, and it is not lightly shared or learned.
