Where did Matthew Modine go?

Matthew Modine is starring three of my all-time favourite movies: Birdy, Full Metal Jacket and Memphis Belle. But has he been in anything worth watching for the last 15 years?

I saw Cutthroat Island, ok action but no masterpiece, right? The Blackout from 1997 was flawed, to say it the least. The Hitler tv-series from 2003 didn't work very well, neither as drama or historically correct fiction.

Did I miss anything? Is he choosing the wrong productions, or has Hollywood just forgotten all about this rather brilliant actor?

reply

How could you forget "Visionquest"??

reply

"or has Hollywood just forgotten all about this rather brilliant actor?"

Bingo. He just isn't a name any more, which is a shame as he is a great actor. His time was the late 80s/early 90s, and he'll probably never be big again

He has done a lot of made for TV movies that were good. What the Deaf Man Heard was great, and the movie where he played baseball legend Honus Wagner.

reply

yeah, I think you are right, there's so many great actors & actresses in Hollywood history, so many, I believe! But, how many of them can lasting their gloriousness for such a long time, or how long will it be?

Straggling in such a glittered world is not a easy thing, one inevitably grows old, freshmen come with youngbodys and enthusiasm, and hit the elder generation continuiously. Then, some of them were forgotten in some degree, I think, it's not their fault, not because they don't working hard, their acting skill getting worse or nobody likes them anymore, it's the natural rules, just like waves of sea: the following one always pushing and chasing the former.

Short Cuts (1993) was great !

If you think he was good in Birdy, FMJ, etc...watch "And the Band Played On..." - he turns in one of his best performances alongside some excellent actors. It's a gripping story - and it'll cause you to be pissed off even more that Modine's not a top name any more.

Him, Judge Reinhold and Steve Guttenberg should star in a movie together.

Are you WELL?

You make no sense, so I can't tell if you're trying to be funny or condemnatory.

You'll blame it on your drugs, I guess....

For what it's worth, he's in The Transporter 2.

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

reply

he was awesome in Streamers too, which is definitely in my top 10.

the most recent movie i saw him in was Mary from Abel Ferrara...great masterpiece!

reply

Yeah its weird around the time of memphis belle he seemed set for super stardom all right, now maybe hes happy doing what hes done since, or just plain bad luck who knows, maybe hes a family man and likes his privacy, just watched birdy and quite honestly out of the two male leads id have said he was set for the bigger career ( i like cage by the way) but thats the way it goes, last film i saw him in was that american football one from 2001 or so ? think it had al pacino in he was the team doctor i think, a so so role to be honest, not in it enough to really do to much.

~ Matthew Modine is just one of the stars of the 80's was his prime and then when the 90's came it just died. Too bad b/c he isn't a bad actor.
