So what happens to them?

So I know it's a bit kiddy of me to want somebody to extend the story for me, but really, what happens with Al and Birdy? What happens in the novel? Does Birdy die? Do they get away and make a run for it to Mexico to live on a beach like "Born on the 4th of July?"

Did they get caught on the ground? I'm really curious!

If there was more love in the world, there'd probably be a lot less dyin'.

Actually they end up going to Barbados and becoming handlers at the local cock-fights. Al loses more of his face in a card game with John Travolta, and Birdy is killed by a rickshaw later when they are in Singapore.

Quit the jokes.

I think everybody can think up a different ending...

In my ending:
the two guys get away and are never seen again in their home city.

I like to think that Al marries the nurse, and they adopt Birdy.
No kidding, I like that end.

That depends... Maybe Al had gone insane too (it could be since he was the only one hearing Birdy) so maybe Birdy really did try to fly and got killed... maybe they weren't runnig but just still holding each other in the cell... That is my two cent

Actually, Al layed Birdy on the ground, told him he couldn't stand to see him like this, smothered him with a pillow, and ran off into the woods. Very dramatic.

1 - they get outside the hospital and all can see that Birdy is back. They get medical discharges and go back to the real world.

2 - none of the last few minutes of the film really happened and they are both still sitting in that room fully broken away from reality.
