i like these movies from the 80s that show night scenes of what the city looked like then, in the dark. i thought about this topic when it showed him in the office tower and the adjacent bldg had windows lit up.
some other movies i recall with night photography from this timeframe:
Well, I'm speaking for myself. I love L.A. and enjoy watching movies that take place in Los Angeles. Especially if there are many shots of obscure places in Los Angeles. I think the eighties was probably an interesting time for Los Angeles before it was all gentrified ( I'm referring to Hollywood).

You should definitly watch the classic and classy Blue Thunder (1983) : lot of night shots of LA from the sky. There are brief similar scenes in Tron too. More recently (can't remember if it's LA though), there's Michael Mann's Collateral. It occurs strictly in a urban night, and there's a whole sequence in a obscured office in a building and many shots of the other buildings windows. Michal Mann sure love nights in city, check his other movies (Miami Vice, Heat).
yes, yes, i should have listed heat. one of my faves. that one has great night shots. in fact matthew vaughn talks about heat a lot in the layer cake commentary. (if you have not seen layer cake I recommend it)
thanks for blue thunder. that is one i have meant to watch for 20 years and never did. roy scheider right?
Angel from 1984 has several night shots of Hollywood. So does Death Wish ll. Funny thing is that I was visiting Hollywood last week and the parking lot I parked at was right next to the Capitol Records Building. Didn't even realize it until I was on Hollywood BLVD and looked back.
Nightcrawler definitely.., I would add American Gigolo which there's a great thread on their IMDb message boards about some of the iconic places now sadly torn and replaced; and Less Than Zero too. Body Double a personal favorite too. I l moved to LA in the 80's and it was great to see many of these places before they changed or were demolished for newer buildings! Drive also pays homage to the city's underbelly with some night scenes similar to Noghtcrawler
