I remember Taylor Hackford (in his commentary) saying that, when they told Bridges he had to lose wait, he replied, "Sure, just get me on a program". Given the results he achieved for this movie (daaamn!), that attitude always struck me as both good-natured and dedicated to his craft. I gotta respect that. Hackford seemed to, as well.
