Yup, I think you're too serious :).

As I understand it the story goes something like this.

The original title was going to be "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai". Then it was "Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th Dimension". They merged the two.

In case you were wondering though, I don't think this film takes itself too seriously ... although I have been checking my 8th dimensional overthruster just in case it's a documentary

perhaps they chose "across the 8th dimension" because he drove his car through
that mountain and into it, so he was going across part of the 8th dimension?
even though he did only do it the one time and therefore only one adventure...

but really I just think it's a cool title for a fun movie. No need to over analyze
this one a whole lot :)
