Production quality? Did they borrow the left-overs from a backlot and film it on second hand equipment?
Buckaroo Banzai is the consummate cult movie, with a small but fiercely dedicated group of fans who "get" it. A few years ago I watched another cult sci-fi flick Repo Man for the first time, and I didn't "get" it either. Coincidentally I titled my review "Utter garbage" 2/10.

Entirely agree. It has to be one of the movies Peter Weller sometimes says he "isn't proud of".
The fact there is some cult following doesn't make it less crappy.
