The red dust

Somebody please explain to me why, if all it would take to render the entire planet hostile to the Visitors was to release a small amount of the red dust into the ecosystem, was it necessary to stage this huge dramatic raid on the Visitors? Why not just quietly and surreptitiously release it into lakes, streams, the ocean, spread it via crop dusters, and such as? I would personally find it more satisfying to watch them all suddenly start dying off with no idea what was happening or why.

Hate is baggage. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time.

They probably wanted to get the visitors out there as quickly as possible before they killed anyone else. Remember that they knew Diana had a doomsday device. She already knew that they developed a new toxin from Sean, Donovan's son. If her people started dying off on earth she'd know why and self destruct the planet.

They had to get to her quickly and stop her. If they were down on earth when she did it then they'd have no chance of getting to the mothership, past all her security, in order to stop it.
