Maggie & Mark - seriously?

Did anybody else think that the idea of Maggie and Mark having any type of serious relationship was kind of dropped out of nowhere to "spice up" the show? I have read the script and that appears to be the case. I have also read reviews stating that this was simply some cheesy, soap-opera type ploy to fill up airtime.

What type of woman who truly cares about her "boyfriend" would be so flippant and uncaring about his feelings?

Did Mark know that Maggie was doing this before they got involved? (Nothing in the script indicated such.)

If they did have a relationship, then why did Chris Farber insert his jelly donut into their private conversation? It was none of his business.

There are too many unanswered questions in this narrative.
