Why do people like Ham Tyler confuses me?
Why do people like the Michael Ironside character
As the guy was a heartless jerk
People say he is the best
True...best at being a jerk!

i would've agreed with you when he first appeared but overall once his character developed he showed he did have a heart. the series would not have been as successful without someone like him.
shareI thought he was a jackass as well untill he had that little scene with Ruby.
And he punched Dan Bernstien in the face I could have kissed him for that.

He did show signs of care though rarely
I did admit that
He was the smart one in the group
Though he and Mike Donovan would butt heads
A lot. But still, just wasn't one of my favorites.
Yes, that scene in the mini-series shows he did have some culture. I don't remember him punching out that traitor Daniel Bernstein. He was going to do it but Caleb knocks him out instead and then places a call to Steven.
sharePersonally, I loved the Michael Ironside character in V, he made quite the anti-hero that obviously from your post, and others I've seen, people just love to hate. Throughout the series as the character developed there were lots of glimpses of Tyler caring, with Ruby, punching Dan Bernstein, etc. I even seem to recall him dressing up as Santa Claus in one episode to surprise a little girl. Hardly something a heartless jerk would do.
i believe the quote when he reads the wine bottle is: "...American, but not at all inferior..." (and SMASH!)
i agree, Ham Tyler was the realist.

He wasn't exactly a jerk, just a little nasty. I think because he was this war guy, he wasn't the sort of guy who could be friendly. I do remember in the mini-series he has a conversation with Ruby and she mentions something about Romeo and Juliet and Dame Edna's performance and he says, "I saw her do that a long time ago in London." That showed that the guy did have some culture in him. Remember, he was fighting for the freedom of the Earth.
shareHe reminds me of Kerr Avon ("Blake's 7" (1978-1981, BBC1)) in some ways: cold, to the point, doesn't let emotion cloud him.
I liked the subtext attributed to his character (Vietnam). After that episode (but before the one where Charlie Chuckles there uses that information to cruelly brainwash him), people got a new reason to respect the guy. Shrewdly written, even if it's mid-80s fare. Even the brainwashing episode wasn't half-bad; Chuckles' presence wasn't worn out yet (even if that idiotic outfit had).
ShelbyTMItchell, I agree with you.
I'm not a big Ham Tyler fan, either. I'm pretty much indifferent to Ham. I could take him or leave him. Ham was an experienced mercenary, but I prefer the idea of more "common" earthlings (or amateurs) fighting against the Visitors, like, Ruby, Julie, Donovan, and Robert. These people were just common folks. They were amateurs who were not trained at combat, and I liked that.
My favorite characters are:
Donovan
Robin
Brian
Julie
Diana
Willie
Martin
Elias
Robert
Ben
Ham was just hard-shelled, but he had a good heart. I Ham!
SHOCK ME, SHOCK ME, SHOCK ME, with that deviant behavior!
