Original Draft of 'The Betrayal' (spoilers)...

I stumbled across a great 'V' website recently, featuring loads of archived articles and scripts. This one was of particular interest:

The original plan was for Lydia, rather than Chiang, to kill Nathan at Charles' behest.

After Kyle's tearful reunion with his father, he's captured by Science Frontiers security; while he's in captivity, in a short, but quite chilling scene, Lydia sneaks in and kills Nathan by lethal injection.

Kyle manages to escape his detention with the help of an orderly who claims to be loyal to Bates (obviously part of a frame-up), and finds his father dead. Lydia, Charles and Chiang then appear and accuse him of committing patricide!

The episode ends with Kyle still in custody, and Chiang very much alive. It's interesting that in this version of events, although he's still allowed Charles to use a computer simulation of Bates to broadcast Visitor-friendly propaganda, Chiang does not murderously betray his employer the way he does in the finished version, and was presumably meant to continue running the Open City for at least a few more episodes.

In some ways, it's a shame they didn't go down this route. I like the idea of Chiang lasting a bit longer, the whole 'Kyle being framed' subplot sounds intriguing and it was nice to see Lydia being so ruthless.

The only downside is that, in this version of events, Nathan was deprived of his moment of glory where he takes a couple of bullets to give Kyle a chance to escape from Chiang.
