Why So Many Characters Left?

Does anybody have any "official" information about why so many of the primary characters left the show partway through the first season? First Elias is killed off, then Robin leaves, then Ham, Nathan Bates is killed off - were these just chronic bad writing, did the actors leave for their own reasons, what happened? I remember watching the series when it originally aired and wondering the same thing: what the heck is going on here??????

I think they saw it as a sinking ship. The show was underbudget and, although the first handful of episodes were good, the story lines started getting weaker and weaker.

Seconded.

The "cat and mouse" game could only go on so long.

The 7th episode is when things really start to go downward, though the earlier episode with "Klaus" (5th ep?) may have been the first sign of "uh-oh, what are the writers doing?")

I recall an uptick in story quality toward the end, but by then the damage was done, and the show was already very low-budget...

But the first 6 eps, save for Klaus, were rather good... if only the show kept on as a run of miniseries...

I liked the first episode...it was a little uneven up to The Deception and then it began to get some steam but at the same time, it was so cheesy. Once they got the new (and improved) credit sequence, the show was a chore to sit through.

To me, killing some of the characters added some dramatic impact and kept me interested. I still to this day remember the episode where (SPOILERS) Charles died and Lydia swiveled his body around a la Psycho and the look of that shriveled corpse...looks silly now but it stayed with me as a 14 year old boy. And (SPOILER) the instant way Elias died...wow.

The problem was that there were too many characters to give storylines to. Just off the top of my head I can think of ten, and that's after not seeing the series or either mini-series for almost 10 years.
In order to make it easier to have storylines carry, they needed to drop some characters. I watched the series, but I wasn't really a fan of it.
