season's 3 and 4...

Hi, I've seen the first 2 seasons and I love them! I've also seen the movie, and honestly I wasn't a big fan of it and hot rod/rodimus prime.

So my question is whats season 3 and 4 like? And how long is rodimus the leader for? Also is there any loveable characters in it (e.g like ironhide, ratchet, cliffjumper, jazz, skywarp, and thundercracker are loveable)?

reply

season 3 continues from the movie so its the same setting and all the same characters and of course new ones added along the way. Rodimus is leader for 99% of the season. season 4 consists of 4 or 5 episodes as the show got cancelled. so those focus on the whole Headmasters thing.

but if you don't like the movie, i imagine you might not like these either. but if you're able to see them for free (netflix or something), its worth going through at least once if you're a fan of the franchise.

I think they're on YouTube? But I might watch them just so I know what it's like. I didn't know season 4 didn't have a lot of episodes, thats a shame. Thanks for the reply.

Seasons 3 and 4 are pretty different from the previous two. They're basically a different cartoon altogether with some recurring characters. Sadly, most of the characters that survived the '86 movie were written out of the show because their voice actors passed away or simply quit.

The seasons kinda feel like like a cheesy, very eighties space opera. There aren't many episodes set on Earth, and there are tons of weird aliens everywhere. There are a few episodes that try to give a more-or-less consistent backstory to the characters and the entire lore, but not all of it works -- especially the lame origin story they give for Unicron.
As a whole, I think the season feels a bit more "self-aware" than the previous seasons, and they really tried to develop whichever character they could, but there were simply too many of them to focus on. For example, Blitzwing is given some character development early on as he joins the good guys, but is then replaced with a new character who has the same backstory (they originally wanted to give Blitzwing a longer character arc, but the execs forced the writers to get rid of him and replace him with a new guy), and who is likewise forgotten after a couple of episodes. So that's two characters pointlessly wasted.

Not sure what you mean by lovable characters, but there are many, lets just say, interesting ones. A lot of the new ones are plain annoying, but there are a few stand-outs.

Season 4 is just a mess, the cartoon was clearly nearing its end by then, that's why only three episodes got produced. It throws way too many new characters and concepts at you and you barely have time to take it all in -- there are freaking 71 characters in the first episode alone, most of them newly introduced and only get like ten seconds of screen time. It's crazy.

By loveable, I meant like characters that are memorable and are awesome (e.g. Cliffjumper, ironhide, Jazz)

Haha season 4 does sound bizarre! I might watch episode 1 just to witness the craziness!

One question, how many episodes does Sandstorm appear in? And is he a memorable character?

reply

Oh, well if you mean memorable, then yes, there's a few. Maybe not quite as "classic" as the season 1 characters, but they're not all bad.

Sandstorms appears in like three episodes overall, and he has a bigger role in two of them. Though I don't remember that many details since I've only watched the season once years ago. Actually, I don't even recall anything about his personality, but again, that wouldn't necessarily mean that he's unmemorable or something, just that my memories have faded.

Sadly, as there were so many characters and since the bulk of the season concentrated on the cast of the animated movie, most of the newly introduced side characters are often given very little focus.

Seasons 3 and 4 are actually pretty good, just very different. I love the movie a lot, so I like that characters like Ultra Magnus, Rodimus, Blurr, Galvatron, etc. are featured. We don't see many of the old favorites. Bumblebee is there a little bit, but in a bizarre turn of bad luck the two characters who survived Unicron (Jazz and Cliffjumper) aren't around because Scatman Crothers (Jazz) died and Casey Kasem (Cliffjumper) quit... such irony.

In my opinion, the biggest problem with those seasons was the horrible animation company that animated most of the episodes. They did a few in season 2, but in the final seasons they did the majority of it.

Season 3 did end on a pretty good note though and would've worked beautifully as a series finale... but then they went ahead and made season 4, which was only three episodes, and they're really not that good.

If you can find the episodes on YouTube, definitely check them out, but try and be a little open-minded. They're also on Netflix (as far as I know) if you have it.

It was the subpar animation along with the subpar voice work done for the new characters, and how they redefined the characters that were introduced in the movie as well.

Welker might be beloved as Megatron but he was horrible as Galvatron. I get that lava is suppose to make Transformers go insane but the voice he uses for Galvatron is almost painful to the ears. Hot Rod/Rodimus didn't hold up without Nelson, and the way they drastically changed the character from this brash young, confident leader that dispatched Galvatron with ease to a self doubting shell of his movie self was a real let down. Rodimus should have been inspired by the knowledge and wisdom of the Matrix that was released to turn him into Rodimus, and not constantly say how inferior he was to Optimus 6 times an episode.

I've always wondered what the actual story was with what happened to season 4. I find it odd that they'd renew Transformers for only 3 episodes, and I can't believe the ratings were so bad they cancelled it after those 3.

I love the first 2 seasons, the movie was okay, seasons 3 & 4 are cool but disappointing at the same time. What ruins it for me is all the new characters after them killing off all the favorites. Personally I think if we would of got one more full season with all the original guys before they did the movie and killed them all off it would of been a little bit easier to accept. Or if they would of introduced all the new characters a little bit slower instead of so close together. I think season 3 would of been a lot cooler if it was all the original characters, then the movie comes out, then season 4 with all the new characters the show might of ran for a little longer. Lol I just feel we got jipped a little bit

I watched S3 as a kid, before I'd ever seen the movie, & became lost & tuned out.

Yet in 2013, I finally went ahead & bought each season on dvd, & did a complete re-watch.

S3 in a way is both the silliest & the most mature, at the same time. It's weird that, S3's writing is probably the best of the series, however its entertainment level & accessibility is rather lacking.

I do think it was a very smart idea not to A. not have Unicron be alive for the season, & B. at the same time keep harking back to his floating head, which keeps the idea of canon/serial alive.

I finally got round to watching the "dreaded" season 3 of the original Transformers G1 cartoon.
You know what? I loved it. since the 86 Movie is the best thing ever in the history of Transformers, its a tough act to follow, but apart from some dodgy animation it holds up well. And why is Wheelie seen as the most annoying character ever? Hes not even in it that much! He didn't annoy me at all, Blurr however.. gah will that guy just STFU!
Overall I preferred the epic space setting, the Quintessons as a 3rd legitimate faction, the *beep* KICKASS music (seriously, ill post a link to the soundtrack below) and some geniune plot development that moves it away from the Earth based adventures of S1 and 2.
So sue me, I like Season 3 better.
