shareWhile it is not released in the United States- you can order the complete series on DVD. DVDs made in Canada will work on American DVD players. I have owned the entire series for more than a year and live in the state of Texas.
shareI live in PA and got it for Christmas last season. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the show. It's well done and really takes you back to those crazy days in the '80s when Cody, Nick and the Boz walked King Harbor and L.A.
The only negative thing is that some of the music is changed on the DVD. But it is minor and truth be said I had a hard time recalling that much of the original music on it anyways. I did miss hearing "So This is Christams" on the beginning of the Home For Christmas ep from season 3 and I heard some people that were upset about the change in music from Be True To Your School. But at least the cool "in-episode" music is still there like with the Chip and Del characters in #1 With a Bullet and the Billy Hagen character in the Wipe Out ep.
I never saw the TV show before I got the complete series on DVD- so I was unable to know what songs actually were missing. I had never even heard of this show until three years ago when somebody mentioned it on a message board for "Hardcastle & McCormick". I found the Season 1 intro of "Riptide" on YouTube, then read through all the episodes on http://www.tvtome.com. Since I am a huge fan of 1980's action shows like "MacGyver", "Knight Rider", "Airwolf", "Magnum P.I.", "Quantum Leap", "A-Team", etc. (I have seen every single episode to all of those except 'Magnum P.I.')- I decided "Riptide" needed to be included in my collection. I watched every single episode to it back in February. I probably never will watch it again since I have seen all of them and TV shows usually are only cool the first time- but it was a great show and an example of how ones today are so stupid. If they ever do make a movie based off of this- I hope it does not ruin it like the ones for "Dukes of Hazzard" and "A-Team" did.
shareI would probably rate Magnum PI as the best of those shows with Riptide second best. Interestingly, I still recall Mad Magazine doing one of their famous parodies in the '80s between these shows. They called it "Rip-Off Tide" with the idea that NBC ripped off the idea of the show from CBS' ultra-popular Magnum. I guess both shows featured Vietnam Vets, a guy with a mustache and a buddy who owns a chopper. But what the heck, both were very good shows and fun to watch.
MacGyver was kind of interesting but I never watched it back in the day and truth be said it gets a little old after awhile. You might want to try such '70s fare as Chips and Battlestar Galactica if you like those older shows. But you are correct when you say that TV/movies bite today.
I like the new V, but not much else. Hawaii 5-0 was okay, maybe I'll try and watch some of it come witnertime. Maybe even try the V mini-series and tv series from the mid-80s if you have not seen them already.
I have Seasons 1 & 2 of "CHiPs", but I may eventually dump them since it looks like no more are being released for that show. "MacGyver" was a very awesome show- but I was a really little kid when it was on and had no idea what it actually was about until I started watching reruns when I was in college. I noticed how it was your typical 1980's action show in Season 1, then it became more like what people usually think of in Season 2. By the 1990's, it got really silly and started seeming like it was not even the same show. You can notice how much Richard Dean Anderson had aged over the years- from a good looking brown-haired guy to a wrinkled blond haired guy starting to look old. I have owned the entire series of "Magnum P.I." for more than two years now- but just have still not yet found the chance to go through them. Guess I keep putting it off because I know it would take more than a month to get through 8 seasons. I had "Riptide" for 11 months before I finally opened it. I got through it in just a week and a half with it being only 3 seasons (and the first one being only 13 episodes).
shareYeah I agree with you about MacGyver. First few seasons pretty good actually then it kind of lost me.
I have only Chips season 2 and might be getting the first season sometime soon. How do you rate the first season of the show? Better than season two or worse?
Man...I can't believe that you watched Riptide in a week! It took me from the day after Christmas until mid-April or so to watch it all. But I guess I didn't have the time to watch it that much. But that would be really overdosing on it.
But just re-watching Riptide really did bring back some memories for me!
The Magnum series was absolutely terrific. I would imagine that I'll be making my move on that one as well in time.
How old of a cat are you, Texas? 40 here. You must be close to that if you recall and love all these shows.
I am 27 years old- I was only a little kid in the 1980's. The 83 in my username represents the year 1983 as it is in my birthdate. I watched "Riptide" in a little over a week because I was not working. All I did from January to May was watch TV shows on DVD because I got the house to myself for 8 hours everyday except on weekends. I cannot do that now as I am going to a community college working on a general certificate so I can get a better job than all the crappy ones I found myself doing after I completed my bachelor's degree over four years ago. As for Season 1 of "CHiPs"- I would say it is better than Season 2. It has been more than 3 years since I saw it. I originally just meant to get the first season so I could get to know the show, but I eventually got the second season more than a year after it came out. Since nothing has been said about the third season coming out with it being more than two years since the release of the last one, I feel like they have discontinued production due to poor sales. Therefore, I really do not feel like keeping the ones I have if those two are all that will be released. I have other TV shows that have not had all the seasons released, but they are more important to me.
shareI'm surprised that you are such a young'un and into all these shows. The '80s were a cool time to be a kid. Chips season 1 sounds good, think I'll check it out.
I can't believe that they haven't released the full series of Growing Pains yet. Only season one is out there with (I think) plans to release the second season.
Some TV shows do not sell well and end up not having the following seasons released. They have only released Season 1 of "The Equalizer"- but I will keep that one anyway. Some people have written to Universal asking for the others to come out and they have been told right now the studio is negotiating over the music rights for the later seasons. People have written endless complaints to A&E about Season 4 & 5 of "Highway To Heaven" never being put on DVD- but the studio decided to discontinue its production because Seasons 1-3 sold very badly. Looks like the only way the last two seasons will ever come out is if another company is given the rights to put the fourth and fifth season on DVD. I watched all the episodes I do not own on YouTube- so I have seen every single episode anyway. That was another show that ended as if there would be more episodes to follow. The last episode was a Christmas special where three powerful men were forced to see the consequences of their selfish actions of how it negatively affected everyone they loved 30 years in the future.
shareI liked Highway to Heaven, but I don't think I could ever get into buying the DVDs of it as there are way too many eps that just wouldn't interest me at all. I'll watch it on tv if I like an episode but other than that, I couldn't do it. But a very good show.
Newhart and Silver Spoons are some other shows that I have season one for, but I don't think they released the rest.
