"I Love You, Brandon"

"Cherie Lifesaver"

"Changes"

"Accidents Happen"

"The Anniversary"

I felt that "Changes" was very depressing and quite realistic. The scene when Punky cuddles next to Henry while he was sleeping in the hospital is so sad. Even though throughout the episode was was humor, the tone of the episodes was still very depressing.

The episodes "I Love You, Brandon" and "The Anniversary" really got to me, the climaxes to those episodes are so heartwrenching...especially Cherie's performance in cemetery scene was powerful and realistic.

The scene in "Cherie Lifesaver" that I felt was sad was when Alan started crying because he felt guilty that he couldn't help Cherie.

Even though this show was cutesy, innocent and a bit corny most of the time, the special episodes really packed an emotional punch.

One of the reasons I still like this show is the fact that it handled some very heavy topics for a kids show. Child abandonment, divorce, kidnapping, death, drugs, alcohol abuse, the list goes on. Not tyical for a childrens sitcom - at least not these days.

This. My favorite issue that this show deals with is mortality. people pussyfoot around the topics of aging and death, these days. Kids think that a 30-year-old with teen children is normal. Punky was adopted by a man in his sixties and created a very close bond with him. She dealt with a neighbor who almost went to a nursing home, and she came close to experiencing death first hand a few times. There is such beauty in teaching kids about the morality of them and those wround them, and most kids these days are missing out on that.

I think that it's not an understatement that Punky Brewster could be pretty dark and depressing for what's otherwise a kids show. If a show like that were to be made today, it would in all likelihood, have to be a one hour dramedy.
