How did they get the photographic backgrounds and where did the stock footage come from? How did they they get permission to use clips from "Star Wars" and other things.

I'm not sure but that is probably why there is no dvd release. They probably can't get the copyrights to them, so they probably can't release them.

shame I know, I think somebody told me that one of the writers was Moe Howard's grandson or nephew or something, which is why they could easily use a lot of Three Stooges clips and references, just as much as Star Wars.

They got the Star Wars clips because Jim Henson worked on Star Wars making Yoda and pretty much every other puppet.

He also worked with George Lucas for Labyrinth.

The "real life" clips from movies like "Star Wars" were really what set this series apart, and one of the reasons why it was so awesome. Bring back "Muppet Babies"!!!
