What does the word 'Nanny' mean? / Was Nanny their mom??

Does anyone know what the word "Nanny" means??

I rarely hear the word Nanny used to describe a person or a parent.

The babies always call Nanny "Nanny"

Is a Nanny like a mom or a babysitter?

Was Nanny supposed to be like a mom, or a caregiver for the kids??

Why didn't the kids call her Mom, or Mommy??

What are the purposes of signatures!!..

A 'Nanny' can be a nursery carer, like a Mary Poppins figure - she was a nanny. Someone employed by the household to care for the children of the house. Sometimes they live there aswell.

In Britain, 'Nanny' can mean Grandparent. Amongst, Granny, Nana/Nan and Grandma, some people call their Grandma 'Nanny'. It's not a name for a Mother.
