So Johnathon just goes around lying to people

Every episode it seems like he makes up some story or lie to get in good with the people he is trying to help. Mostly that he knew someone that the other person knew.

Those are "white lies". He can lie because he means to help them in the long run and would never harm them. It doesn't exactly make it right to lie, but ever so often he also tells the truth (kind of randomly) about him being an angel.

The good thing is he isn't arrogant about knowing things no human could know. He never uses it to his own advantage.

He's an angel so who's to say he didn't have contact with the people he mentioned.

That's the way I see it. I'm watching the pilot now. He says "A friend" gave him the flowers and bike. I assume the friend is God or someone God sent.

Telling white lies to protect people from themselves or from knowing harmful things is not a sin.

It's like Spock says on Star Trek: Vulcans cannot lie but they can exaggerate ( or omiT certain information for a person's own good).

Oh well. Better that, then his methodology used in his previous two shows, when he resorted to punching out folks that didn’t come around to his way of thinking :D
