The Action Force version (which was re-dubbed and retitled from the American G.I. Joe version) definitely aired in the UK right around the same time G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was airing in the United States. I don't know if the original American version has ever aired in the UK.

Here's a link with some good info on the history of Joe/AF - http://gijoe.wikia.com/wiki/Action_Force

You're welcome.

I hadn't heard of Action Force until a few years ago, and I'm having fun slowly learning more about the toys, comics and animated series.

Yes GI JOE was known as Action Force in England and instead of fighting COBRA their enemy was Baron Ironblood and his army of Red Shadows. The Red Shadows were then betrayed by Baron Ironblood when he leaked information to get them killed by Action Force so he could change his idenity to Cobra Commander and form COBRA. This was done to fit into the american GI JOE Comics and after a time the whole Baron Ironblood and the Red Shadows was completly rectoned out and forgotten when Marvel comics took over the rights of Action Force and reprinted the american GI JOE comics.
There was a whole range of Baron Ironblood and Red Shadows era toys in the uk in the early 80s. Heres a Link on youtube to someone who has a collection of them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR0V-3IpjNE

So it's treason then!
