Who was the genius
I watched this show when it first came out. Since then I have wondered many times; Who was the genius that made a sitcom and then cast Jim Carrey as the straight man?

It's not even so much that for me as the basic writing was really disappointing for a MTM show or, in fact, any show in general. The cast had some talent. This was one of Jack Gilford's near the end roles so that had some poignancy. The direction of the show disappointed me the most-engaging in typical stupid sit-com stuff. Jokes of chickens, eating in a working area blah. The office dynamic never really worked for me as well.
I expected more delving into what was the show's original basis-the dynamics of creating a cartoon. It was merely wallpaper for typical tired & benign sitcom shenanigans. Julie Payne ('Aggie') strident overacting frequently annoyed me. Nancy Lane as 'Andrea' had the opposite effect. I really liked her sardonic and slyly realistic comic sensibility. I think the beginning of the 1st episode had the best comic sensibility (I'm up to ep. 5) with *spoiler* some nicely mordant death jokes about Winkler right after Carrey arrives to see his coffin.
Otherwise, so far totally inert and not funny at all. I can't see why they greenlit this, unless as a favor to MTM or just going on a hunch based on their track record. Someone, in an old review they posted about the show here a long time ago said "you'll really appreciate the humour, the biting one-liners and the brilliant characters of The Duck Factory!". Now THAT is funny.
Agreed. It's been decades since I saw the show but as I recall, the jokes were poorly set up and mostly fell flat.

What are you going on about? Jim Carrey was clearly NOT straight on this show. He was hot for the duck.
