Janet Maw
She reminds me of Judi Dench.

Have you seen her in The Mayor of Casterbridge?
shareThis is the only thing I've seen her in. It started slowly for me but by the end I was totally absorbed, I finished it yesterday.
Also I was not prepared for and lol'd when she punched Slope. That was not a slap, but a proper right hook!

Yes, the older period dramas sometimes take a little while to get into, but really worth the effort. I LOVE Barchester Chronicles. I didn't think I would, but I gave it a try because it was so highly recommended by a friend. There are so many excellent performances in it, esp. Donald Pleasence.
Janet Maw plays Elizabeth Jane in BBC's 1978 miniseries of The Mayor of Casterbridge starring Alan Bates (Henchard), Anna Massey (Lucetta), Anne Stallybrass (Susan), and Jack Galloway (Farfrae). This program also takes a little while to get into, but it's also very much worth the effort. IMO it's the best adaptation of TMoC available.

I loved the whole cast, especially Nigel Hawthorne and the scintillating Geraldine McEwan.
I'd love to check that out at some point, but confess I've read none of Trollope's novels.

I really enjoyed the first volume of 4 eps much better than the last three. Could have been my mood, but I think I enjoyed Mr Harding most of all and he was not as in as much of the last 3 eps.
Also, too much focus on Slope and the Bishop's wife who annoyed me to no end. I think we could have done better with less of her. I had to FF through some of it due to my dislike of those characters. Maybe if they showed more background info to explain their obnoxious personalities so we could understand them better, but never happened and at the end I almost felt sorry for Snopes because the Bishop's wife who was behind some of it, got no reproach whatsoever.
Also, the Bishop was too much of a wuss for me...no man in his position would put up with such a scheming person and sit there and take it.
I wish the first volume and continued in the same vein as the first. I really liked Bertie Stanhope and had wished Mr Harding's daughter had hooked up with him. He was great fun and she needed some. She seemed so different to the person she was in the first 4 eps. They did away with her husband and she had a baby all in one fell swoop. I felt like it was two different shows with some characters crossing over to visit from time to time.

The series is, of course, based on two different novels. Mr Harding (Pleasance) appears more in the first few episodes because he appears more in the first novel; the first novel is, after all, called "The Warden" and is Harding's story. The second novel (Barchester Towers) is about the battle to appoint the new Dean and is, therefore, more the story of Mrs Proudie, Mr Slope and the Archdeacon.
"...the Bishop was too much of a wuss for me...no man in his position would put up with such a scheming person and sit there and take it." Speaking from inside the Church of England, and having worked in a Cathedral Church that was very much like Barchester in many ways, I can absolutely assure you that plenty of men in his position DID put up with such scheming persons - and still do today! In the Cathedral in which I ministered, indeed, the Dean's wife was nicknamed "Mrs Proudie" precisely because she was SO like the character in the books!
Hi Randommovies, I thought I might see you here. I started watching the series and am in love with Donald Pleasence in his role here, so different to the villains he usually plays.
So far I am really enjoying it, but feel so badly for the poor Warden of the hospital (Donald). We'll see how things go in the other eps. I got started kind of late tonight on it.

Yes, I remember feeling that way about the poor warden too. He's such an honorable, gentle, kind man. Mr. Bold always makes me so mad for taking up the idea in the first place, as does the newspaper man who writes those horrid articles suggesting Mr. Harding is corrupt.
shareI wasn't angry at Mr Bold but I was angry at the newspaper writer, he certainly made up the snarky comments about the Warden and he didn't know him. I can't watch it tonight due to company, but tomorrow for sure. Mr Bold realized too late that newspapers will say what they like to bring attention to their cause.
