Before they were famous

...Or well known, or somewhat successful or something...

Most of the main cast were nobodies, except Pat Roach, who'd appeared in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon as a hardman wrestler and had minor fame doing the same thing in real life. And Gary Holton who had minor Rock 'n' Roll fame. Later most of them went on to become fairly successful, some more so than others.

Series 1
* Ray Winston as Colin the Deserter. I think he appeared in Scum before this.
* Michael Elphick as Magowan. A few years later he would appear in Boon, and become a household name in UK for that.
* Jenny Eclair as a surprisingly good looking German waitress in the hotel. (And whose German is not bad either.)
* Sheila Reid, Mrs Bomber, appeared in 35 episodes of Benidorm apparently.

Maybe an honorable mention for Lysette Anthony (Christa), but I think she was already well known at this stage. She later posed for Playboy.

Brigitte Kahn (Dagmar) and Michael Sheard (Herr Grunwald) had fairly good careers before this. Sheard played Nazis a lot, and someone in Grange Hill!

Series 2
* Melanie Hill as Hazel Redfern, seems to have gone on to a pretty full career after this.
* Denise Welch as Jean, the woman in Oz's former flat. Later Mrs Healy, and ex-Mrs Healy. Went on to bigger things.
* John Bowler as Howard Radcliff, the architect. Turns out he is in 229 episodes of the Bill!
* Sammi Davis as Pippa, the polytechnic girl Barry scares off.
* Sammy Johnson (Martin Cooper, the thug Moxey fights with) went on to appear in twenty episodes of Spender.

Honorable mention for James Booth (Kenny Ames), who had been in a lot of films before this, but had a recurring role in Twin Peaks for several episodes.

You forgot Bill Patterson, who was known before AWP and has had a long good TV and film career appearing in big films like The Killing Fields and A Private Function.
Val McLane played Aunt Mimi in a John Lennon film just before AWP
But I think the best known face from pre-AWP was probably Bryan Pringle who had had a long career as an actor popping up in loads of stuff like Z Cars, The Professionals, Last Of The Summer Wine and had a big role in 60s classic British film Saturday Night Sunday Morning with Albert Finney.

I didn't forget him. Bill Patterson was already a well known actor (at least here in Scotland) long before then.

Sammi Davis as Pippa, did she play Dawn in Hope and Glory in 1987???

Winestone was in Scum (both film and banned TV Version)

reply

Yes, Sammi Davis was in Hope and Glory... saw it the other day. Looks a lot younger than she did in Pet around the same time.

I remember watching it at school in the 90's (say 93-94) and remember thinking she was a bit of a sort, don't know what she's up to these days must be mid 40s I guess at least.

Holton & Ray Winstone both appeared in 1979's Quadrophenia, one of the biggest British movies of it's era. Tim Spall also appeared but only in a very brief scene.
Michael Elphick had also appeared in The Elephant Man, a massively successful international hit. He also had his own tv series with Private Schultz. Oh, he was in Quadrophenia too
And of course Herr Grunwald gets killed by Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes back

Hmm... this is titled "Before they were famous" - Michael Sheard had been in several things before AWP... So doesn't count. Ditto Ms Kahn.

"You know the Met cops in series 2? Younger one is Kevin Doyle, nowadays playing one of the servants in Downton Abbey, perhaps best known as the murderous teacher in The Lakes. "

That's a good one.

"And my favourite - the overzealous (and cuckolded) customs guy in series 2 is Nick Stringer, memorably played Billy, a gangster abducted from his pub and suspended on a meathook in The Long Good Friday."

Frostbite or verbals?!

He also played a wig-wearing Aussie in a hilarious episode of Only Fools.

Ha! I read your sig as a quote too - for a second thought 'I dont remember that bit'...

But yeah, Long Good Friday is an endlessly quotable film.

If you look at the location manager, you'll see it's Brian True-May (as opposed to the fake Brian May, the Queen guitarist and astrophysicist).

Normally, this wouldn't be of much consequence but True-May is the brains behind the series Midsomer Murders. I've seen a few interviews with this rather conservative-minded gent in magazines and was amazed to see his name on AWP. He's become fairly well known. Anyway, I'm a fan of both series.

In series two Barry purchases a new shirt just before they fly off to Spain, the clothing store assistant is Bob Smeaton who had been the lead singer in north-east band white heat, played various other minor acting roles and later became a director of documentaries.

I only just noticed having watched the film for the first time in over 20 years, but Gary Holton appears in Hazel O'Connor's 1980 film "Breaking Glass", he plays her first guitarist who is quickly replaced by "Dave" from Quadrophenia.
