the true auf wiedersehen pet ended with series 2 !!!

as far as im concerned and im sure many fans will agree with me, auf wiedersehen pet came to an end with the end of series 2 in the mid 80's ! those shows that appeared on the bbc in the 90's are just some bastard creation and cant really compare to the true classic 80's series on itv ! no gary holton (RIP) as wayne is the biggest downer those new shows had !! and a total balls up of miscasting noel clarke as waynes son didnt help at all !! it was just a pc move by the bbc ! wayne spoke about a child he was about to have in series 2 so to ignore that and miscast clarke was a dumb unforgivable move ! THE TRUE AWP BEGAN AND ENDED IN THE 80'S, WHAT CAME AFTERWARDS WAS A PALE PALE SHADOW OF THE GREAT ORIGINAL SERIES ON ITV !!

Kind of... I agree with you... BUT... you know there's a special called "Educating Oz" just after Series 2? Never seen it, but it might count.

The BBC series is okay, it's watchable, but it veers towards travelogue.

Yeah, it was about raising awareness to AIDS!

You are entitled to my opinion, whether you want it or not!!

Completely agree with OP.The first two are top notch.Classics.The thing is the later shows represent TV since the 21st century in general. They are fast moving with convoluted plots.80's Aufpet was slower paced, more character based, less PC and far more enjoyable for these reasons.Alot of my favourite scenes are the ones where you just see the characters talking about mundane things, and getting on (or not getting on with each other) and you really don't get that in the later ones. It's more about the plots.

I think series 3 and 4 were alright- things didn't get really silly until the final special but even that's watchable. I remember thinking at the time making Wayne's son black was going to be a silly PC idea but it actually worked pretty well (in his scenes with Oz especially) and Noel Clarke gave the ageing lads a link to the modern world that was essential really.

ive got all series on DVD and i have to say i enjoy watching series 3, 4 and the thailand special the most. for me, all the characters have matured with age but theyre all still doing things they did when they were young and i think its hilarious. i watched series 1 & 2 on there 1st ITV runs and at the time they were the best hours viewing you could get and theyre still funny now but not quite as good as the later ones. hey, thats just my opinion. it wont be the same view of everyone...

3 was ok, even if just to satisfy the endless "what would they be doing now" question that plagued us fans for years. Everything post-3 was just garbage.

When I think of the show I think of the first 2 series. I did enjoy the 3rd (though not the 4th or 5th), but it didn't compare to the original. I don't agree that Wyman being black was a problem. The problem was that he was a boringly written character played by an actor without the charisma to match Gary Holtons (though I've seen the actor do better in different roles). I would have been interesting to have Wayne's son with Christa turn up though.

Series one is just about perfect TV. Series two sometimes hits those heights too -- the episodes where the lads are working at Thornley Manor.
It was certainly the sublime characters and situations that made those series so special.
In the later series the plots -- often overly dramatic, convoluted or genuinely ridiculous -- just seemed to get in the way.

Probably not as ridiculous casting as Compo's son in Last of the Summers Wine. What made it worse was he was his son in real life & couldn't act to save his life.

Agree with others series should have ended after season 2.

LotSW was unwatchable for a long, long time before it got axed. Decent enough in the 80s, but as a gang show for comedic pensioners looking for one last bbc payday, beyond dire.

I kind of agree but at the same time I still like the later ones in their own way, and to be honest I thought the "true" AWP ended before they went to Spain not at the end of series two.

The Spanish episodes were a pale imitation of the previous ones. No roughing it, not even seeing where most of them slept, and the main problem - taking several partners with them? What was that about? That's not Auf pet. It was more like a holiday for them. Sometimes nostalgia can make people more forgiving. I'm certain that if Oz had sang in the later ones or some of the gang took their partners with them abroad they would have been slammed. Those two things were huge mistakes in that series as far as I'm concerned. All in all, the Spanish episodes are a bit of a chore in my opinion and even though I prefer series 2 to 3 overall, I enjoy the Arizona ones more than those.

AWP is my favourite TV show but series 1 is the only series I consider to be consistent in quality. The others had various flaws even though I still enjoy them.
