Why does Hans always shout 'Klop!' ?
Every time the Colonel says "Heil Hitler," Hans follows it up with "Klop!" (or something like that - maybe I'm hearing it wrong). Is this a joke from one of the shows that "Allo Allo" is spoofing?

shareKlop is a german word meaning the same as ditto.
shareapparantly Sam Kelly refused to say "Heil Hitler" so "klop" was used instead
I'll trade with anyone who has a jaccuzzi!!!!
Not true. As I've said above, he doesn't say "Klop" He says "tler!" The end of Hitler, because Hans was too lazy to say the whole thing. I've seen him say it himself in an interview on youtube
shareLooks like we wer both correct
Captain Hans Geering (Sam Kelly) (series 1 to 4, series 7) - Original assistant to Colonel Von Strohm, he is lenient for a German officer (e.g. he is not shocked to find out that his uniform is being made by a Jewish tailor), he also frequently visits the café, where the waitresses provide him with much entertainment. He is mistaken as a British Airman in 'Camp Dance' and sent to England. He returns briefly in one episode of season 7, having accidentally become a trusted member of British intelligence, who is astonished that his friends Rene and Edith were actually the mysterious 'Nighthawk', and is very happy in his new life. He was noted for his odd pronunciation of Colonel. It usually sounded like "Colon-Nell". Whenever the Germans have to give a salute to the Führer, Geering often heralded the Führer by saying "-tler!" instead of the full salute, when said incredibly fast, sounded like 'clop', it was humorous because if there was a whole group of Nazis, they would be several 'Heil Hitlers' followed in the background by a 'clop'. In a 2007 BBC special about 'Allo 'Allo! Kelly said "Hans was just too lazy to say the whole sentence" However, he does say the full "Heil Hitler" except with an exaggerated emphasis on the "-tler!" Rumours that actor Sam Kelly, a Jew, refused point blank to give the regular salute, are apparently false.[3] Indeed, in the second series episode Herr Flick's Revenge and the third series episodes Flight of Fancy and Pretty Maids All in a Row, the Hans Geering character gave the full "Heil Hitler" salute. Kelly also went on to play Hitler himself in Stalag Luft in 1993.

are you absolutely sure about that?
after I read here he was saying "tler", I watched carefully, and observing his mouth closely it definitely looks like klop, or at least a word ending with the letter P.
It looks like he pronounces the P at the end; how can your lips come together while pronouncing an R, you don't need your lips to pronounce an R?
Any link to that youtube interview?
he says 'tler' - [TLA] and in the end he closes his mouth - that makes the illusion of a 'P' [tla-p]
shareNo offense here... but I don't care what he said in an interview... there is no way I can say '-tler' fast, slow, or sideways that makes it sound like it sounds in the show or the interview.
I CAN make the sound by saying 'clop,' though. So, I am going with that.
Ok, from the man himself then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y7oULsKxOQ#t=3m13s

Excuse me, English is not my native language.
I'm not so think as you drunk I am.
Well you truly do learn something new everyday. 25 years after I watched this programme I ALWAYS thought he said KLOP! Even after Kelly explains it, in the clips, I struggle to hear TLER! but rather KLOP! But hey, if thats what it was....
I find that ducks opinion of me is very much influenced over whether or not i have bread.
Yep, I've watched that interview and still think it's BS.
He says clop or klop or something closely related (whatever that could mean), not -tler.
BENFICA - a brute force indeed!
Yea, I wouldnt believe the actor who played Hans either, why would you, he's only the one who said it.

Klop is a german word
I had always believed that the German Wehrmacht did not adopt the 'Hitler' salute until forced to after the assassination attempt, but just used the old style 'hand to the cap peak' salute. Having said that, it was funnier with the Sam Kelly variant!
Whit sad old loser'd be thick enough to don thon get-up?

I always heard him saying klop too;
nice to know the real word he's saying, though I never made "tler" out of it.
But klop being the German word for ditto is total BS.
Klop isn't a German word at all.
In Dutch it happens to mean knock, but that's just a coincedence.
He does say "-tler"
As people have said, Sam Kelly did confirm this in an interview in about '06
The interview was on the Series 8 DVDs of ALLO ALLO (Australia). Even in the interview it sounds like klop, cause the way he had to say it was he had his lips almost closed and saying it fast.
So with that combination:
- almost closed lips
- saying it fastish
- saying "-tler"
it sounds like klop, but he is saying -tler
Hope that makes sense.
Perhaps because Ks are funny, he says it with a strong K sound.
But wouldn't it sound like "Kler" then? It's all very confusing.
Klop is a german word meaning the same as ditto.
I seen that video interview where he says he is saying, "tler" as "tla" like a Bostonian or New Yorker not pronouncing their letter R. But it still sounds like "klop" to me. The funny thing is that someone suggested that maybe it's because he say's "tla" then closes his mouth fast. Well in that interview, he says it and does not close his mouth fast, yet it still sounds like he says a klop with a p at the end! lol

He definitely says 'tler! I saw an interview on TV, I think it was "100 Greatest Comedy Shows" or something like that. It had interviews with some of the cast and they said that Hans didn't say the full salute was because he didn't really like Hitler that much. Hope this helps, sorry I can't be more specific as it was a while ago when I saw this but I do know it was on either Channel 4 or E4 in the UK. It might have been "100 Greatest Comedy Catchphrases".
shareI actually also thought he said "Klop!" when i saw it on television, but after getting the series on DVD i could hear it more accurate.
When you listen very closely, its sounds like it is a combination of the H in Heil and ler in Hitler, making it: H'ler
I've never heard it as anything but "tler". But then, I'm Swedish.
Intelligence and purity.
After just finishing watching Season 7, I actually went to the scene where Hans comes into the room and immediately says "Klop!" With the beauty of DVD I slowed it completely down and watched frame by frame. When he speaks the word, he definitely finishes by closing his mouth in a "P" pronunciation. If it were to be finished in a "A" or "LA" word, his mouth would be more open.
No matter how much I watch this scene over and over, dissecting it, I have to decide that he says "Klop!" This being said, even with the fact that Sam Kelly has claimed he had said "-tla."
The movements of his mouth when speaking betray him.
"KLOP!"
It's "tler"! I don't care what you say, but it's not "klop".

If you play the Dvds with close Captions on the captions all say Klop not one says tler so it is kinda weird the actor himself says he used a different word.
shareCaptions aren't always correct though. And if you think about it, "tler" makes so much more sense than "klop". Hans doesn't want to say "Heil Hitler" (maybe because he's not really a nazi), but he doesn't dare to not say it in front of the general either, so he makes a compromise with himself and shortens it to "tler". At least that's what we've always thought in our family. But him saying "klop" doesn't make sense at all. What does that even mean? Of course, one earlier poster in this thread suggested, that it was a German word for "ditto", but I don't think that's true.
Intelligence and purity.
klopF isnt the same word as ditto. it is an expression from the card games, that in a way means something like stay in poker. i think it is used in romme and skat. BUT very unlikely that any non german would know that word.
i think he just made up a sound for whatever reason and years later, in the interview, had forgotten why or was embarrassed.
he does NOT say tler

Actually all the subtitles say tler and none say klop. So all the evidence states it is tler not klop.
shareActually all the subtiles say it as Tler not Klop and you can not hear a P combined with the vidence of the crew, script, interviews. So all the evidence states he says Tler not Klop. End of story.
shareThe subtitles probably vary depending on whether you have a Region 1 or Region 2 DVD. I suspect the original British company writes the Region 2 subtitles, but people at the American distributor write the Region 1 subtitles. American writers often mis-hear the dialogue and consequently make mistakes in transcribing the subtitles. For example, there is a character named "Shazzer" in the Bridget Jones books, but the subtitles on the Region 1 DVD call her "Shazza." American writers also sometimes change the dialogue deliberately, such as transcribing "Mum" as "Mom." It's so annoying!
shareThe R1 version subtitles have Klop or Klup, however this means nothing really and could simply be a misinterpretation or auto captions.
share30 years on and my mum still says "klump" whenever she means ditto. Yes, she says it with an m in it. And I have tried explaining that he doesn't even say that anyway, makes no difference. It was funny the first few times.....:)
shareAll I hear is Klop
