Reference to Asperger's?

In the scene with the 2 computer geeks, one says to the other "remember when you asked me to tell you when you're acting rudely and insensitively". Very odd thing to ask of someone.

So?

Obviously, the fat geek understands that his scrawny bespectacled friend has a condition like Asperger's, so he's there to take care of him and warn him when his condition might cause problems. He's just showing humanity, and I'm sure Asperger's has been around since the dawn of man, to be honest, so many others did the same, when they understood what it was and didn't just ostracise them from society.

Asperger's was first recognized as a medical condition in the early 80s, and wasn't remotely part of the mainstream awareness until the 90s. An early 80s movies casually referencing it is pretty remarkable, if that's the case.

Another reason this movie rocks :)

Dorks have been socially awkward throughout human history regardless if the condition is formally recognized.

And just to add it in, there are plenty of people who are socially awkward while not having Asperger's. While it's an indicator it's not exclusive to the condition.

reply

Socially awkward is one thing, but necessitating someone to bring it to your attention because of the severity of that detachment is entirely another.
