The opinions about this movie

From what I have read about Videodrome here on IMDB, some people like the movie and others don't, really mixed critics here.

There only comes one logical explanation about Videodrome to my mind that can answer both lovers & haters of the movie.

Okay here it goes: "It was acceptable in the '80s"

It had to be said someday.

Long live the 80s--I mean, the new flesh!

Its not to all tastes (Cronenberg films usually are not to everyone's taste) and its not that great a film. Woods performance saves the film. Still rather ahead of its time.

Its that man again!!

But this implies it ain`t "acceptable" for the later decades... which clearly isn`t the case. Perhaps some of the special effects look dated in a sense, but there`s a certain immediacy and rawness to them that actually makes ´em rather more effective than the slicker, more "advanced" effects of the later day.

Thanks for your opinion franzkabuki,

I agree with you on the special effects, they may look dated (just how I like them), but hey the movie is like 30 years richer now!

The power of this pre-Internet movie is primarily in the message and it's prediction, a message still relevant in today's Internet-dependent society.

Perhaps it was the title of this thread that was a little misleading. It should have been "A simple fact anyone can agree with".

Posting in this thread was also meant for *beep* and giggles, I like what PreachCaleb did with that.

Slick and impotent - that'll be the "new" VIDEODROME.

I got news for 'em. There's gonna be hell to pay. 'Cause I ain't Daddy's little boy no more.

I really enjoyed Shivers and The Brood, they were both amazing. I watched last night Videodrome and Jesus, this movie is so boring and outdated in my opinion.

I saw this movie years ago and it has remained vividly with me...I think I liked it but I was likely stoned when I saw it.
I don't think the current CGI would date it for me because I like Jaws and am somewhat appreciative that the shark was actually there and not inserted later...so for me it would never be about the special effects.
The tone of the movie is decidedly weird and I would think would have a cult following...There's a market for strange in any era.

Anytime you make something with such extreme content you are going to have wildly varied reactions. I would expect nothing else from something like this.
