Cronenbergs obsession..

In a large proportion of his movies-he seems to like to merge the biological with the technological/mechanical, in a gloopy sort of cross form.
Which is probably why he was totally born to remake 'The Fly'.
I wonder what drives this 'thing' he's got?

reply

He does do a lot of "body horror". I saw this years ago and I can't have taken half of it in properly because I've just watched it again and was a bit shocked! The part where James Woods' stomach opens up like a vagina and he puts what I think is a dildo into it was truly an "Ow! My eyes!" moment. Good lord!

reply

yes that is definitely clear, nature and mechanics is his thing... have heard for years of weird experiments on people by inserting wires throughout their bodies.....its a very interesting topic and movies always portray the future....

reply

What experiments? It's medical science now. We shove all kinds of man-made things into our bodies all the time.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

back when they would mess with lobotomy and shock therapy, experiments with wires sticking out of arms and heads. I dont know what for, but there were lots of strange hospitals and psych wards during those times experimenting with very nasty stuff

There seems to be a big theme of Transhumanism in Hollywood lately...guess he was way ahead of the curve.

Freud pointed out that people always have some discomfort about their bodies and it relates to their childhood upbringing. Cronenberg was just one of the many directors who explored Freudian themes in his film. Self disgust turned into body horror being one of them.

Freud would have a field day with explaining the fascination that the technology people have with Singularity and Transhumanism.

artist and alien designer h.r. giger was probably doing this before cronenberg.

Larry Gaylord: "a billion people come in on a day off, and they don't flip out!"

reply

Freud was a phallocentric, coked out degenerate and crazier than a s h i t house rat. Don't know how the meek and obviously superior psychoanalyst Jung tolerated him for so long.
