How much their short selling actually made?
So at the end, they doctor the crop report and (ignoring how exactly they could go to the stock exchange which is probably NYSE on Wall St and not the World Trade Center shown) then go on a short sell spree.
So at the end they basically day trade with short selling. I.e. they sell first by borrowing and then buy it.
Opposite to how regular trading where you first buy and then sell. In short selling, you just reverse it, sell and then buy.
Concept is still same to make money. Buy low, sell high. Or sell high, buy (back) low. Profit.
Anyways, so they sold FCOJ (frozen concentrated orange juice) at $1.42/lb and bought it at $0.29/lb.
So about 4.5x their money.
But question is how much did they invest?
I think Denholm Elliott gave them maybe $50k and Ophelia maybe $50k or $100k? Valentine and Louis had maybe almost nothing. But say they had $10k. All together maybe $150k to $200k tops.
So this makes it $900k. Which is like $700k profit. So about $170k for the 4 of them. That's about it. (Maybe close to $500k in 2022 money accounting for inflation?)
This is hardly enough to retire tbh at Bahamas or wherever they ran off too.
People made way more withe Tesla or Gamestop in a week or a year. Gamestop was like $3 to $480 (160x) in a year and $30 to $480 in a week iirc (16x)
Anyways, what do others think on this?
