Hamlin?

I know! Hamlin was a fictional community, but where would it be approximately located? Also, why didn`t the EMP affect the community? They were obviously relatively close to San Francisco, since they witnessed the initial blast "white-out"?

They WERE affected by the blast. It just took a little longer for them to die.
The town is a fictional town north of San Francisco, near Santa Rosa. The actual place this film was shot was Sierra Madre, Calif. east of L. A. and Pasadena, Calif. (Southern Calif.)

Didn't they say somewhere in the movie that San Francisco was 40 minutes away? It couldn't have been that far. I thought the father had gone off to work and was in SF when the bomb went off. They'd have to be within commuting distance.

As far as the EMP, I assume it didn't affect the old man's radio because it was tube-based and not transistor. Other than the cars in line at the gas station, I don't think we see any electronic devices operating. Would an EMP affect the ability of cars to start?
